                Global EV Outlook 2020

Entering the decade of electric drive? The Global EV Outlook is an annual publication that identifies and discusses recent developments in electric mobility across the globe. It is developed with the support of the members of the Electric Vehicles Initiative (EVI). Combining historical analysis with projections to 2030, the report examines key areas of interest such as electric vehicle and charging infrastructure deployment, ownership cost, energy use, carbon dioxide emissions and battery material demand.
This edition features case studies on transit bus electrification in Kolkata (India), Shenzhen (China), Santiago (Chile) and Helsinki (Finland). The report includes policy recommendations that incorporate…

                Clean Energy Transitions Programme 2019

Annual report 2019 Since the launch of the Clean Energy Transitions Programme (CETP) in November 2017, the IEA has significantly expanded its work to help accelerate energy transitions in major emerging economies. The CETP has played a critical role in both helping to build global momentum for clean energy transitions and in further strengthening the IEA family.
The CETP Annual Report 2019 summarises the programme’s activities in 2019, highlighting major achievements, successes and outcomes, as well as identifying opportunities for further collaboration with partners and potential partners. It also highlights activities planned for 2020.
                The report reflects on the…

                Coal 2020

…coal-fired power generation in 2019, but not enough to offset declines elsewhere. In China, growth in coal-fired power generation, increased steel production and shrinking coal use in small industrial and residential boilers resulted in an overall increase in coal consumption of 1%. Across members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), coal use rose 14% in 2019, mainly reflecting demand growth in Viet Nam and, to a lesser extent, in Indonesia. A pandemic-driven drop in coal demand in 2020 In 2020, global coal demand will experience its largest drop since the Second World War, falling 5%...

                Renewables 2020

…defy Covid to set new record Driven by China and the United States, net installed renewable capacity will grow by nearly 4% globally in 2020, reaching almost 200 GW. Higher additions of wind and hydropower are taking global renewable capacity additions to a new record this year, accounting for almost 90% of the increase in total power capacity worldwide. Solar PV growth is expected to remain stable as a faster expansion of utility-scale projects compensates for the decline in rooftop additions resulting from individuals and companies reprioritising investments. Wind and solar PV additions are set to jump by 30%…

                China’s Emissions Trading Scheme

…China’s ETS, set to expand to seven other sectors, will be the world’s largest by far, covering one-seventh of global CO2 emissions from fossil-fuel combustion.
The initial years of operation will be crucial to test the ETS’s design and establish trust. Given the dominance of coal power in China’s power sector and in its overall CO2 emissions, how the country’s fleet of coal-fired power plants is managed will be essential for China to meet its climate goals and other sustainable energy goals. The effect of the ETS on the operation of coal…

Oil Market Report - February 2020

The IEA Oil Market Report (OMR) is one of the world's most authoritative and timely sources of data, forecasts and analysis on the global oil market – including detailed statistics and commentary on oil supply, demand, inventories, prices and refining activity, as well as oil trade for IEA and selected non-IEA countries. Highlights Global oil demand has been hit hard by the novel coronavirus (Covid-19) and the widespread shutdown of China’s economy. Demand is now expected to fall by 435 kb/d y-o-y in 1Q20, the first quarterly contraction in more than 10 years. We…

Post Covid-19, further reform is necessary to accelerate China’s clean energy future

…governments intentionally constrained people’s ability to move around in order to stop the spread of the virus. Since transport is energy intensive and plays a dominant role in global oil demand, the impact of this crisis on energy – especially on oil – was more pronounced than on the overall economy. The International Monetary Fund expects the global economy to contract by 4.8% in 2020, while IEA analysis estimates that total energy demand will decline by 6% and oil demand by almost 8% this year. The lockdown measures imposed by governments around the world have tended to result in very…
