Fuel Economy in Major Car Markets
…Introduction This report builds on a series of Global Fuel Economy Initiative (GFEI) working papers investigating the fuel economy of newly registered light-duty vehicles (LDVs) across the world from 2005 to 2017 . The results are tracked relative to established GFEI targets, which are an intermediate target of 30% improvement of new LDV fuel economy, weighted globally, by 2020, and 50% by 2030.The analysis builds on methodological improvements introduced in the previous GFEI report , and it maintains the broad country coverage that has characterised these analyses. Only Norway and Switzerland did not have additional data for 2016 and 2017…

Land-Use Competition between Biodiversity and Net Zero Goals
A case study of Canada Meeting global targets for energy, climate, and biodiversity conservation has major implications for land use. To ensure that the tripling of renewable energy capacity by 2030 aligns with the goal of protecting 30% of the planet’s land and water by the same date, robust mechanisms that direct solar and wind projects away from the world’s most biodiverse areas are needed. To address the potential impacts of renewable development on biodiversity, the IEA developed the Renewable Energy and Land-Use Model (REALM), which identifies areas of overlap between renewable projects, critical mineral mining, and…

Empowering Ukraine Through a Decentralised Electricity System
…IEA and Jülich Systems Analysis are made accessible as open data to support further modeling initiatives. The downloads are found under the “Related files” tab in the “Rooftop PV Assessment” section, both as csv tables and geodata shapefiles. In addition to the data displayed above, hourly generation timeseries over 20 years are provided per every district and module orientation. Detailed information about the methodology and further result analyses have been published here.Below map illustrates the energetic potential of rooftop photovoltaics in Ukraine either at province (oblast) level or at district (raion) level. The data allows to explore the capacity and energy potential…

Clean Energy Transitions Programme 2023
…improve energy data collection and to develop capacity among policy makers in partner countries. It contributed to the Agency’s role as a key coordinator of the global energy dialogue, as reflected in the many outcomes and mandates that emerged from G20, G7 and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Ministerial meetings throughout the year. The programme also helped facilitate the IEA’s engagement with the Presidency of the 28th annual UN climate meeting (COP28) in Dubai and supported the Agency’s ambitious action plan that informed the main outcome of that summit: the first ever global agreement to…

Strategic actions to support energy statistics
…Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine and Uzbekistan. The document focuses on three aspects of energy statistics central to the EU4Energy programme and the development of statistics in the focus region: improving energy data quality, but also ensuring that statistics publications do not stay on the shelf, by encouraging their wide dissemination and use to support policy-making. The document is available both in English and in Russian. It explains actions that could be undertaken to improve statistics, drawing on the experience of the IEA’s participation in regional energy statistics programmes (such as INOGATE and MEDSTAT), discussions with the…

Real-world policy packages for sustainable energy transitions
Many countries are embarking on transitions to sustainable energy systems. Others are already well underway. Their transitions will require fundamental and interrelated changes in technologies, fuels, infrastructure, policies, markets and institutions. We provide an initial exploration of the key elements of policy packages for sustainable energy transitions as well as their application in different timeframes. Using the lens of real-world policy implementation, an overarching theme of the paper is that there is no single energy transition policy package that fits all countries - national policy objectives and constraints will shape each jurisdiction’s policy mix. Taking the challenge of implementing…
