                Behavioural Changes

                Country and regional highlights
Governments have supported or mandated behavioural changes in buildings and on roads
                CO2 emissions
Behavioural changes can quickly reduce CO2 emissions
                Activity
Growth in activity is inevitable as economies develop and populations increase, but behavioural changes can help to offset these increases
                Policy
Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the resulting energy crisis have increased the salience of behavioural changes

                Nuclear Power

A new era for nuclear energy beckons as projects, policies and investments increase
As the world’s second-largest source of low-emissions electricity after hydropower, nuclear power today produces just under 10% of global electricity supply. Now, fresh momentum around the world has the potential to open a new era for nuclear energy.
Power generation from the global fleet of nearly 420 active nuclear reactors is set to reach a record high in 2025 as Japan restarts production, maintenance works are completed in France, and new reactors begin commercial operations in various markets, including China, Europe, India and Korea…

                Gas Flaring

                CO2 emissions
The volumes of natural gas flared in 2022 were around the same level as in 2010
                Technology deployment
Oil producers have a range of readily available options to reduce and avoid flaring, with a number of new technologies also under development
                Policy
A number of countries have introduced policies to reduce flaring
                Investment
Operators that sell high-flaring assets are often passing on a problem to other operators that may be less willing, or less able, to cut down on flaring

                Building Envelopes

Stronger efficiency is the first and best policy to bring down energy bills
Variations in energy efficiency exist both within and among countries. For example, in some European countries with similar climates it can take twice as much energy to heat the same floor area or within one country the energy consumed between the most efficient and least efficient homes for a given size can vary by a factor of up to three.

                Steel

                Country and regional highlights
Near zero-emission projects advance fastest in Europe, with some progress for low-emissions facilities globally
                CO2 emissions
The CO2 emission intensity of steel has been relatively stable in recent years, but needs to drop significantly to align with the NZE Scenario
                Energy
A reduction in reliance on coal and an increase in electricity use are required to get on track with the NZE Scenario

                CO2 Transport and Storage

                Country and regional highlights
Development in major regions has advanced significantly in 2023, and some countries have announced first-ever projects
                Activity
Dedicated CO2 storage capacity is matching capture plans as infrastructure-specific announcements surge
                Technology deployment
Pioneering shipment of CO2 for dedicated storage in Europe paves way for future CO2 shipping ventures
                Innovation
                Policy
Government support for CO2 transport and storage infrastructure is growing

                Aviation

                Country and regional highlights
Political agreement on net zero targets for aviation has been complemented by fiscal and regulatory policies to promote sustainable aviation fuels
                CO2 emissions
CO2 emissions from aviation have reached 90% of their pre-Covid-19 peak
                Energy
Improvements in energy intensity have not been sufficient to counterbalance energy demand growth in recent years
                Activity
Passenger activity has nearly closed the gap with pre-Covid levels

                Country and regional highlights
Important investment programmes are being deployed to push energy efficiency and decarbonisation in light industries
                CO2 emissions
While light-industry emissions have declined since 2010, a more rapid decline is needed to get on track with the NZE Scenario
                Energy
The share of fossil fuel use is declining, but progress needs to accelerate

                Cement

                Country and regional highlights
Major policy developments of the last year hold promise for reducing emissions from the cement sector and increasing public procurement of low-carbon concrete
                CO2 emissions
Cement emissions remain stubbornly high – the development and deployment of new technologies is essential to get on track with the NZE Scenario
