Quad Critical Minerals Initiative
In July 2025, the Foreign Ministers of the Quad (Australia, India, Japan and the United States) met to discuss shared issues and priorities. In a joint statement issued following the meeting, the Foreign Ministers highlighted the Quad's concerns regarding the constriction and reliability of critical mineral supply chains and warned that reliance on any one country for processing and refining exposes Quad industries to economic coercion, price manipulation and supply chain disruption. To address these issues, the joint statement announces the establishment of a "Quad Critical Minerals Initiative", through which Quad countries will collaborate to secure and diversify critical mineral supply chains. As part of this Initiative, Quad countries will cooperate on supply chain resilience measures, as well as on electronic waste minerals recovery and re-processing. The Quad countries also intend to coordinate with private sector partners to facilitate investments in the minerals sector.
