Background information

The IEA has convened a new Global Commission on People-Centred Clean Energy Transitions: Designing for Fairness to develop actionable policy recommendations for energy and climate ministers and international decision makers on how to fully integrate the principle of fairness into the design of all clean energy policies.

The Commission – which is co-chaired by Alexandre Silveira de Oliveira, Brazil’s Minister of Mines and Energy, and Teresa Ribera, Spain’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for the Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge – will hold its first meeting in Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil, during the gathering of G20 energy ministers.

Prior to the event, the Commission will release a paper on key policy design considerations for affordable and fair transitions. The meeting will mark an opportunity for Commission members to reflect on the central questions raised by the paper and discuss how the Commission can achieve its objectives in the months ahead.
