Canada 2025
IEA Contributions to the G7
In 2025, Canada holds the Presidency of the Group of Seven (G7), which coincides with the 50th anniversary of the G7. Canada’s overarching G7 priorities as announced by Prime Minister Mark Carney include three areas:
Protecting our communities and the world;
Building energy security and accelerating the digital transition;
Securing the partnerships of the future.
The G7 Leaders met in Kananaskis (Alberta) on 15-17 June 2025 (Chair’s Summary). Among several G7 joint statements, Canada launched two signature initiatives with relevance to the energy sector at the G7 Summit:
The IEA was pleased to cooperate with Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) to provide policy advice and analysis to inform the Critical Minerals Action Plan and energy pillar of the Statement on AI for Prosperity.
G7 Energy and Environment Ministers’ Meeting, Toronto, 30-31 October
The IEA participated in the G7 Energy and Environment Ministers' Meeting. IEA Executive Director Dr Fatih Birol addressed ministers at several sessions across the two-day meeting, including the opening plenaries and thematic sessions on energy security, critical minerals, energy and AI, innovation and nuclear power. The IEA co-hosted with NRCan the second IEA Energy Innovation Forum, which took place in Toronto on October 29.

G7 Energy and Environment Ministers adopted several key outcomes:
As input to the G7 Ministerial meeting, the IEA produced a wide range of analysis and recommendations that allowed the G7 to strengthen its actions and commitments on energy security and energy innovation. The IEA also convened thematic workshops to support these Ministerial outcome statements, covering topics including transmission infrastructure and gas security.
At the request of NRCan, the IEA organized a series of AI focused workshops which brought together policymakers from G7 countries, industry leaders, and technical experts to discuss both the challenges and opportunities presented by the rapid growth of AI and its implications for energy systems. These workshops helped to inform the development of a G7 Energy and AI Work Plan, which includes a commitment to work with industry, domestic stakeholders and international partners to identify proven and cost-effective solutions to address the energy challenges faced by AI and data centres in collaboration with the IEA Energy and AI Observatory. The IEA also prepared a summary of recent IEA activities on AI, as well as forthcoming work over the next 12 months.
In June 2025, the Agency published a report, Designing Energy Efficiency Policies to Enhance Affordability, which analyses the affordability-focused energy efficiency policies of G7 countries. This was informed by an IEA workshop held in January 2025 with G7 county representatives, where affordability was identified as a key challenge.
