                Energy Efficiency 2025 IndustryIndustry

How and where is energy used? Total final consumption in 2024 was over 450 EJ and has grown by around 25 EJ since 2019. Industry accounts for the largest share of this demand, at nearly 40%. Industry saw the strongest growth since 2019, contributing two-thirds of the total increase in global energy demand. The industrial sector can be divided into energy-intensive industries, responsible for three-quarters of total industrial demand, and less intensive industries, which are responsible for the remainder. In energy-intensive industries, energy is largely used in processes that require high-temperature heat, generally above 500°C. Efficiency improvements…

Electric vehicle battery deployment Electric vehicle battery deployment grew by almost 30% in 2025 Electric vehicles (EVs) remained the primary source of global battery deployment, accounting for more than 70% of the total in 2025, slightly down from almost 80% in 2024. In 2025, EV battery deployment reached 1.2 TWh, an increase of almost 30% compared to 2024, and more than 7 times greater than in 2020. Light‑duty vehicles remained the dominant segment, representing more than 85% of the 2025 EV battery deployment. However, the fastest growth came from electric trucks, for which battery demand more than doubled – largely thanks…

The Global Energy and Climate Model (GEC Model) uses macro drivers, techno-economic inputs and policies as input data to design and calculate the scenarios. The values for the different data categories and scenarios used in the GEC Model 2025 can be downloaded here.In particular more details regarding power generation technology costs for the Current Policies Scenario, the Stated Policies Scenario and the Net Zero Emissions by 2050 Scenario can be downloaded in excel format, including detailed projections at the 2050 horizon regarding overnight capital costs, annual O&M costs, efficiencies and other contributors to electricity costs at regional…

China’s Official Energy Finance in Emerging and Developing Economies Trends in China’s Outbound Energy FinanceTrends in China’s Outbound Energy Finance

This section examines the major shifts in China’s outbound energy finance over the past decade, with a particular focus on developments since 2022. Drawing on publicly available project information and systematically compiled datasets, the analysis highlights structural changes in the scale, composition and institutional drivers of official financing, with aggregate figures presented up to 2024. Together, these trends reveal how China’s role as an energy financier is evolving – from a gradual decline of traditional policy-bank lending to the rise of more commercial-oriented official providers – and what this means for investment patterns across EMDE. Overall financing trends…

Development of feedstocks Differences in policy implementation and feedstock availability has resulted in feedstock mixes that vary widely by country and region: In Europe, biogas production was initially supported by feed-in tariffs and relied on energy crops as an important feedstock. Given the land use and biodiversity concerns associated with energy crops, this landscape has since changed, with several European countries implementing restrictions on their usage. The feedstock mix in Europe is now moving towards a mix of agricultural residues, animal manure, organic municipal solid waste and industrial waste.  In China, household and farm biodigesters were central to biogas…

Chile 2050 Energy Transition Roadmap Executive summaryExecutive summary

Chile’s natural resource endowment is key to its growth and to global security Chile has achieved a sustained economic growth and poverty reduction trajectory. Its economy has grown steadily at an annual average rate of 2.6% since 2010. Mining remains the backbone of the economy, with copper and related industries accounting for around 50% of export earnings and 12% of GDP. Diversification efforts have increased exports of agricultural products, wine, forestry goods and seafood, but mining continues to dominate Chile’s economic landscape. While this dependence exposes Chile to global commodity cycles, it also positions the country to…

Clean Cooking Alliance to integrate into the IEA in major step forward for international cooperation on clean cooking access

…through strengthened in-country policy support, enhanced coordination with industry and the mobilisation of additional investment.IEA analysis shows that more than 2 billion people lack access to clean cooking, relying instead on wood, charcoal, and other polluting fuels that pose serious health risks. The problem is most acute in Africa, where four in five households still lack access. The absence of clean cooking contributes to 2.5 million premature deaths annually, primarily affecting women and children, and requires families to spend an average of nearly four hours per day gathering fuel and preparing meals. It is also a major…

IEA Ministerial hosts high-level dialogue to accelerate clean cooking and energy access

…Senegal, India, Mexico, France and Brazil, alongside leaders from multilateral institutions and the private sector, contributed to a roundtable discussion focused on priority actions to accelerate deployment and mobilise additional capital.IEA analysis presented during the session shows that Africa could achieve universal access to clean cooking by 2040 by replicating policies that have delivered the fastest rates of progress globally. The World Energy Outlook 2025 introduced an Accelerating Clean Cooking and Electricity Scenario (ACCESS). In that scenario, LPG provides clean cooking access to over 60% of those currently lacking it, with electricity providing access to a further 17%, bioethanol…
