Web Conference: Talking process: steps in developing regulatory frameworks for CCS demonstration and commercial deployment
BackgroundSignificant progress is being made in the development of CCS legal and regulatory frameworks worldwide. Australia, the European Union, the United Kingdom and the United States have been at the forefront of such developments for some time, but many other countries are currently implementing or considering CCS regulation, including in the developing world. As progress is made, interesting insights can be gained into the process involved in getting appropriate regulation in place. These insights can guide and inform governments as they move through different stages of framework development. This webinar will review the regulatory development processes in a number of…

Scaling Up Renewables in the Java-Bali Power System: A Case Study
Introduction One of the world’s largest floating solar photovoltaic (PV) power plants, Cirata, is under construction in Indonesia. It is an innovative design with floating PV arrays to provide power in association with an existing hydropower plant in West Java. The 145 MW floating PV installation on the Cirata Reservoir is expected to be completed by fourth-quarter 2022. Indonesia plans to develop a further 60 floating PV installations to contribute to its target of 23% of power generation from renewables by 2025. Integrating rising levels of variable renewables into its power system is important for Indonesia. In that regard…

Islands need resilient power systems more than ever. Clean energy can deliver
…for example, electricity cost almost seven times more than in the United States, while electricity tariffs in Caribbean countries are more than double the US average. This can negatively impact socio-economic development. In Pacific island countries, fuel imports accounted for up to 13% of GDP in 2019.Islands – including those that make up the group known as Small Island Developing States (SIDS) – also need to upgrade their energy infrastructure so that it is resilient to higher temperatures, more frequent natural disasters and flooding related to rising sea levels. At the same time, aging power systems are often inadequate to…

Bottom-up energy transitions: Managing the rise of energy communities in Latin America
Commentary Energy communities, or community-led energy projects, are increasingly being used in Latin America as a tool to build more resilient and inclusive electricity systems. These initiatives look to provide long lasting energy solutions built on promoting active community participation in all the phases of a project. In parallel with other existing policy efforts, these initiatives are helping address a range of challenges in the energy sector, including energy poverty, the continued use of contaminating fuels for electricity generation and poor reliability of the electricity grid. As a result, the applications and structures of energy communities vary significantly depending…

IEA Workshop on Gas Supply Security
…supplies of LNG, in particular, will require policy makers, in close coordination with private actors, to facilitate the development of innovative commercial offerings, novel procurement mechanisms and new co-operative frameworks. With the support of Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the current workshop aims to provide an assessment of the challenges related to global gas supply security and identify policy options to mitigate risks and uncertainties weighing on gas supply adequacy. The workshop provides a special focus on Asia’s fast-growing markets, where natural gas is closely linked to policies aiming to phase-out coal-fired power generation.
