World Energy Employment 2025 Executive summaryExecutive summary

In 2024, global energy employment growth outpaced job gains in the wider economy for the third year in a row. Continued strong investment in energy infrastructure underpinned expanding energy employment, up by 2.2%, nearly double the economy-wide rate of 1.3%, bringing total energy sector jobs to 76 million. Since 2019, 5.4 million energy workers have been added – about 2.4% of all new jobs globally. In some countries, its contribution is far larger, reaching one in five new jobs in China and one in ten in the United States since 2022. The pace of the expansion in recent…

The Implications of Oil and Gas Field Decline Rates Executive summaryExecutive summary

Discussions on the future of oil and gas often overemphasise demand drivers and underappreciate supply drivers Debate over the future of oil and natural gas tends to focus on the outlook for demand, with much less consideration given to how the supply picture could develop. This asymmetry is misplaced and a thorough understanding of the rate at which production from existing oil and gas fields declines over time is more important than ever. The International Energy Agency (IEA) has long examined this issue. Decline rates – the annual rate at which production declines from an existing oil or gas field – underpin…

Unlocking Ukraine’s Hydrogen Opportunity: A Roadmap The hydrogen opportunityThe hydrogen opportunity

Highlights Ukraine has 18-38 Mtpa of technical renewable hydrogen potential, though economic constraints would result in lower potential. Most potential is in regions with scarce water resources and competition from other industrial activities. Domestic demand for use for steel and fertilisers could reach 2.2 Mtpa, if pre-invasion capacity is restored, and the government target has set a target of 7.2 Mtpa of production by 2050. Most hydrogen production projects proposed prior to the invasion are close to the border with the European Union.Ukraine has a technical potential for solar PV and onshore wind equivalent to 9‑14 times its pre…

Energy Efficiency 2024 Does a heat pump work in a house with poor insulation?Does a heat pump work in a house with poor insulation?

Even with poor insulation, heat pumps still save energy As well as reducing CO2 emissions, a heat pump can use three to five times less energy than an efficient gas boiler. However, an often-heard argument when considering replacing a gas boiler is that the house needs to be well-insulated for the heat pump to work. Heat pumps do work best in a well-insulated house because their heat output is at a lower temperature than a traditional boiler, and they perform best when providing a consistent heat output with minimal heat losses. If a house loses a lot…

The Middle East and Global Energy Markets

The IEA is responding to the energy market impacts of the conflict in the Middle East and continues to closely monitor the latest developments. The disruption to oil and gas flows through the Strait of Hormuz and attacks on energy infrastructure across the region have major implications for energy security and affordability – and for the world economy. The IEA's Executive Director has said the combined impacts amount to "the greatest threat to global energy security in history." The war in the region that began on 28 February has impeded energy trade flows through the Strait, creating the largest supply disruption in…

                Electricity 2026 DemandDemand

The Age of Electricity has arrived, underpinned by strong demand growth As the Age of Electricity moves apace, demand is on a solid upward trajectory in our five-year forecast period from 2026 to 2030. Amid robust growth, the next five years will add on average 50% more electricity demand per year than over the past decade.  The brisk pace will be supported by growing industries, electric vehicles, space cooling, and data centres, among many other end uses. Electricity consumption is now projected to grow at least 2.5 times faster than overall energy demand, hastening the world’s transition…
