Global Energy Review 2026 Natural gas
Natural gas demand growth slowed in 2025 Following a strong increase of 2.8% in 2024, global gas demand growth slowed significantly in 2025 amid weaker industrial activity and relatively high spot liquefied natural gas (LNG) prices in the first half of the year. Demand increased by 1% in 2025, translating to an increase of around 40 bcm (or 1.4 EJ) in absolute terms. Incremental demand was largely concentrated in the United States and the European Union – where it was supported by colder winter weather – and in the Middle East, where gas use in the power sector grew rapidly…

Sheltering From Oil Shocks Road transport fuels
Road transport accounts for around 45% of global oil demand, ranging from a third in Korea up to two-thirds in some countries in Europe and Latin America. In advanced economies, passenger cars dominate road transport demand, accounting for around 60% of road energy use. Trucks make up most of the remainder. In emerging economies, there is also a significant role for two/three-wheelers (scooters, motorcycles and tricycles), which account for around 5% of road transport demand and are more numerous than cars in many countries. The share of energy use in medium and heavy freight trucks is also…

Multiple Benefits of Energy Efficiency for Business Health and well-being
Energy efficiency can improve working conditions, increase employee productivity and reduce sick leave Energy efficiency improvements can enhance working environments and worker health. By reducing waste heat, air pollutants and other process inefficiencies, they lower health and safety risks while improving comfort and working conditions. In manufacturing, these effects can be direct. For example, in electronics manufacturing, conventional soldering requires thermal pre-heating cycles that exposes workers to high ambient heat as well as safety risks. Replacing this with induction heating enables localised heating of the material, reducing energy demand by around 70% while eliminating heat stress and safety hazards…

Gas Market Lessons from the 2022-2023 Energy Crisis Impact analysis of the two largest LNG import regions
…on an element of price risk in cases of immediate and unforeseen demand requirements.Equally central to the continent’s natural gas landscape is its extensive underground gas storage capacity, totalling about 100 bcm, spread across 19 EU member states and a handful of non-EU markets. Given the highly variable nature of Europe’s gas demand, underground gas storage plays a crucial role in balancing both seasonal and immediate fluctuations in demand and supply, acting as an important pillar of the continent’s security of supply. Finally, beyond access to varied supply sources and sizeable underground gas storage capacity…

China’s Official Energy Finance in Emerging and Developing Economies Case 6. CNOOC investment in Guyana: Whiptail Oil Field
Project overview and impact Guyana has become a dynamic upstream oil market, transforming from a non-producer to an emerging oil exporter within the decade. Since the first discovery of oil in the Stabroek Block in 2015, six large-scale developments have been approved, turning the area into a central pillar of the country’s economic strategy. Production is expected to exceed 1.3 million barrels per day by 2027, making Guyana one of the largest per-capita oil producers globally. The government’s production sharing contract allocates 14.5% of total crude output to the state, with the remainder…

Multiple Benefits of Energy Efficiency for Business The business value of energy efficiency
…can significantly enhance worker health and well-being. Lower exposure to harmful pollutants leads to healthier staff and better working conditions, with tangible productivity gains of up to eight additional productive days per employee each year. These benefits add up. Every dollar saved on energy can deliver more than one additional dollar through those multiple benefits, highlighting how energy costs alone understate the full business case for efficiency. Building on the IEA’s work on the multiple benefits of energy efficiency, this report focuses on how these gains materialise within firms, and how businesses can capture these benefits in practice.
