Outlook for Biogas and Biomethane Key issues affecting biogas and biomethane projects
…the global average methane emissions leakage rate for oil and gas production was around 1.2% in 2024. Several strategies exist for reducing methane emissions from biogas: best practices during production (e.g. reducing filling levels in the digester to avoid emergency pressure releases of gas), covered storage of digestate, combustion of off-gases during biomethane upgrading to capture biogenic CO2, and use of leak and repair programmes to resolve issues quickly. Frameworks setting maximum GHG emissions intensities for biogases and fuels – such as the EU's Renewable Energy Directive (RED) and California's Low-Carbon Fuel Standards (LCFS) – are…

Nepal
Almost the totality of the electricity generated in Nepal comes from hydropower. Most of the energy supply is from biofuels and waste as 21 million people still rely on traditional biomass for cooking. In 2000, 81% did not have access to electricity but with remarkable efforts from the government, only 6% of the population remain without access today.

Sheltering From Oil Shocks Introduction and context
…energy crisis of 2021-2023, which pushed energy affordability to the forefront of energy policy priorities. A succession of turbulent years for the global economy and the energy sector has also depleted the fiscal means for governments to respond to a new crisis. The resumption of transit through the Strait of Hormuz is indispensable to relieve the strains on markets and to allow for stable flows of oil and gas to international markets. In the interim, countries are taking or considering a range of measures to mitigate the impacts of the disruption, whether by increasing oil supplies or reducing demand…

Global Critical Minerals Outlook 2025 Regional snapshots
Policymakers have woken up to these energy security challenges with a wave of new policy initiatives Governments around the world are intensifying efforts to secure critical mineral supplies through public funding, strategic partnerships and domestic policy reforms. In Europe, regulatory support and investments have ramped up to support critical mineral supply, supported by national investment funds and cross-border partnerships. North America is leveraging financial incentives to stimulate private-sector investment. Latin America, rich in critical minerals, is projected to reach USD 154 billion in mining and refining value amid regulatory reforms to attract foreign capital. China, already dominant, is…

Sheltering From Oil Shocks Cooking fuels
…alternative modern cooking solutions, such as electric stoves or electric pans, could further reduce demand, subject to available equipment stocks and grid capacity. For around half of these households, a basic alternative would be less than 5% of monthly income, and targeted incentives can improve the affordability, provided supply chains can accommodate the increased demand. How governments can enable this: Governments can encourage those households to use their electric devices more when they own it or support greater electric appliances adoption with targeted incentives for lower-income families. Any incentive scheme should prioritise those with limited resources, and consideration should…

Outlook for Biogas and Biomethane Introduction to biogas and biomethane
…common. Consumption of biogases is increasing. However, biogases are still a relatively small part of the global energy mix – representing around 3% of total modern bioenergy production. Biomethane use has increased at a rate of 20% annually over the past 5 years, although from a low base (it is currently around 1% of natural gas demand). Most markets rely on public incentives to provide support and certainty to biogas and biomethane producers. These include: production targets, supply- and demand-side incentives, and indirect support. * only available for plants under 25 GWh/year ** only available for plants under 150 kW

Financing Clean Energy in Africa Mobilising capital for a sustainable future
…of local industry, including in relation to off-grid electricity and clean cooking solutions.Although a small player now, over the long term domestic markets are fundamental to energy sector development. Under the SAS, finance originating from or disbursed through local channels increases nearly threefold by 2030. Developing green finance facilities provides a channel for finance while also supporting the creation of bankable projects and the development of capacity at other finance institutions. There are also innovative ways to tap into the growing domestic capital markets, particularly pension funds, such as local currency guarantees or securitisation of distributed energy assets.
