Scaling-Up Renewable Energy Program for Ethiopia (SREP)
Ethiopia's SREP was designed in consultation and coordination with the Africa Development Bank, the World Bank, other development partners and key Ethiopian stakeholders. The strategy aims to maximize potential of renewable energy. Under this programme Ethiopia is accessing USD 50 million (96% grant, 4% loan) for a geothermal project (Aluto Langano, 200 MW) and a wind project (Assela, 120 MW), as well as a clean energy small and medium enterprise facility.

Export of ferrous and non-ferrous waste and scrap metal
In 2013, South Africa established a Price Preference System (PPS) aimed at improving the availability and affordability of scrap metals in the domestic market. The measure was extended until 2027 by the Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Competition of South Africa. The following conditions apply for the exportation of scrap metals:- Ferrous and non-ferrous waste and scrap metal cannot be exported unless they have first been offered to domestic users- Increased controls in the application for export permits.Price preference calculations for scrap metal are done ITAC on a regular basis to determine local market prices, based on international…

Increase in electricity license threshold for embedded electricity generation projects
In August 2021, South Africa increased license threshold requirements for embedded electricity generation projects from 1 MW to 100 MW, effectively exempting embedded electricity generating companies and projects below this limit from licensing obligations with the National Energy Regulator. Only registration with the Regulator of South Africa will be required. The new legislation aims at stimulating investments in new electricity generation, contributing to national energy security as surplus production is expected to be reinjected to the national grid.

Excise Taxes for Petroleum Products
The General Fuel levy applies to petroleum products' consumption in South Africa, including petrol, diesel, biodiesel, unmarked aliphatic hydrocarbon solvents and unmarked illuminating kerosene (unmarked paraffin). These products are subject to the payment of a General fuel levy and road accident fund (RAF) levy. In December 2021, these levies were estimated to weight 30% of petrol price (19% and 11% respectively). Rates surged over the 2008-2022 period, fivefolding the RAF levy (R 2.18/L in December 2021) and tripling the general fuel levy (R 3.93/L). The general fuel levy generated R80 billion for government in 2019…

Energy Efficiency Obligation
In 2008, South Africa introduced energy efficiency obligations to attain 294 MW and 1 204 GWh worth of savings by 2015. Electricity used in all sectors except transport are covered in this policy. All electricity public utilitie are oblidged to follow this legislation. Eligible energy efficiency measures can be applied to: lighting; shower heads; heat pumps; compressed air; drives; motors; ventilation; and process optimisation. Savings calculations are based on engineering estimates; deemed savings and metered savings. Eskom administrates M&V process and its Energy Audit Division contracts with universities across South Africa to conduct independent M&V assessments…

Breakthrough Agenda Report 2025 Executive summary
The value of international collaboration in the current context Well-targeted international collaboration can amplify domestic efforts to reduce emissions and deploy low-emission technologies and solutions. Acting together, countries, companies and global initiatives are in the unique position to harmonise standards, aggregate demand, mobilise finance and move markets in ways that are nearly impossible to achieve in isolation. Geopolitical tensions and economic uncertainty are testing the resilience of international co-operation, but also underscore its importance to avoid fragmentation of global markets and delaying action on emissions reductions. This report therefore identifies many practical opportunities for countries to work…

Investment in next-generation geothermal is surging. Policies are key to further growth
Next-generation geothermal readies for take-off Next-generation geothermal is seeing a burst of financing, innovation and new supply agreements Geothermal energy harnesses naturally occurring heat found beneath the Earth’s surface to provide heating and cooling, electricity and energy storage. As global electricity demand rises and power systems place a growing premium on firm supply, geothermal energy’s ability to provide an around-the-clock, low-emissions source of power is attracting renewed attention. However, easy-to-access conventional geothermal resources are relatively rare and mostly confined to a small number of shallow geothermal hotspots globally, accounting for…
