Global Energy and Climate Model
Scenario analysis of future energy trends Global Energy and Climate Model Over the past four years, the IEA has worked to develop a new integrated modelling framework: the IEA’s Global Energy and Climate (GEC) Model. This model is now the principal tool used to generate detailed sector-by-sector and region-by-region long-term scenarios across IEA's publications, including the World Energy Outlook series and Energy Technology Perspectives series. In 2021, the IEA adopted for the first time a new hybrid modelling approach relying on the strengths of both models. The integrated framework of the IEA’s Global…

More stringent and broader coverage of fuel efficiency standards for light-duty vehicles is needed
For cars and vans, increasing fuel efficiency standards is important as even in the Net Zero Emissions by 2050 Scenario, nearly 80% of cars and vans on the road in 2030 are still powered with internal combustion engines. Sales of heavier, less efficient SUVs reached around 46% of global sales in 2022, while electric vehicles were just 14% of sales. More and more countries are formulating vehicle efficiency standards and some are even putting in place zero-emission vehicle sales requirements. To be in line…

Ordinance No. 354/2020. The Mining and Development Program
In 2020, the Brazilian Minister of Energy and Mining issued Ordinance No. 354 to approve the Mining and Development Program. It aims to generate income and wealth from mineral resources to foster the country's sustainable development. The Program has the following relevant goals:Produce economic knowledge about the mining sector through the collection of data. This information will be used to monitor and evaluate mining public policy; Increase social and environmental mining responsibility. The program seeks for actions to achieve social, environmental, and economic sustainability, such as increasing mining waste management and reuse; promoting a circular economy; reducing greenhouse…

2010-2019 Plan for Energy Expansion
In December 2010, Brazilian Ministry of Mines and Energy approved the new 2010-2019 Decennial Plan for Energy Expansion. Such plan implements the phasing out of fossil fuel power plants construction by 2014 and foresees major expansions in the hydro and wind grid-connected power sectors over the next ten years.
Installed capacity targets for renewable energies have been fixed as follows:
Hydro: from 83.1 GW in 2010 to 116.7 GW by 2019.
Small hydro: from 4 GW in 2010 to 7GW by 2019.
Biomass: from 5.4 GW bin 2010 to 8.5 GW by 2019.

World Energy Investment 2025 Eurasia
Eurasia has seen a significant decline in oil investment since 2015, although fossil fuels maintain their dominance in the region's energy mix Fossil fuels dominate the overall energy production and investment mix in Eurasia. Countries in the region face common challenges, including significant temperature swings from harsh winter conditions to warm summers, ageing infrastructure and often inefficient patterns of energy use: the energy intensity of Eurasia’s GDP is around 70% higher than the global average. Annual energy investment in Eurasia was almost USD 190 billion in 2015, but has since followed a downward trend, reaching its lowest point in the…

Sustainable Transport Policy for Armenia: A Roadmap
As a part of the EU4Energy Programme, the Armenia Energy Policy Roadmap on Sustainable Transport presents a comprehensive, evidence-based framework for transforming the country’s mobility system into a sustainable and efficient transport system. The strategy seeks to deliver significant reductions in CO₂ emissions while strengthening regional connectivity, fostering economic development, and enhancing energy security. While Armenia has made notable progress in rolling out electric vehicles and electrifying its rail network, it still struggles with a high dependence on imported fossil fuels, a lack of data transparency and weak co-ordination among government agencies. This roadmap is structured to…

Prospects for Natural Gas Certification
This report offers an overview of the role of certification in natural gas supply chains, provides a broad mapping of existing initiatives, highlights selected regulatory and market developments, identifies areas where improvements may be needed, and presents recommendations to support the development of credible certification frameworks.Certified natural gas refers to gas whose environmental and social attributes – such as greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions performance, water use, local community impacts and worker safety – have been independently verified against defined criteria or benchmarks. In 2024, around 7.5% of global natural gas production was certified, with volumes primarily originating from North America…
