                Driving the Nation Program

The Driving the Nation Program is a program developed by the Australian Renewable Energy Agency to enable the demonstration and deployment of new zero emissions vehicle technologies through continuous open calls for projects. In 2023, it launched two calls worth a total of around USD 100 million to support the demonstration of heavy-duty EVs (2024) and charging infrastructure roll-out (2023). The program structure allows the government to take a portfolio approach to project selection rather than having to select the top projects on a given metric if they are all similar in nature.

                Carbon Claims Guide for Businesses

In November 2011, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission published Carbon price claims - Guide for Business. The aim of the Guide was to provide businesses with guidance and information about their rights and obligations under the Competition and Consumer Act 2010 in the lead up to the commencement of the carbon price on 1 July 2012. The Guide sets out a range of guidance and information for businesses in relation to claims or represenations about the impact of the carbon price, including the ACCC's role, problematic carbon price claims and information to support claims, along with checklists and examples…

                Home Battery Scheme

The Home Battery Scheme gives all grid-connected South Australians access to state government subsidies and low-interest loans - provided by the Clean Energy Finance Corporation - to help pay for a home battery system and new solar if required, up to $4,000 per battery installation.

                Green Loans Programme for Households

The Green Loans programme was announced by the Australian Government in May 2008 as part of its Climate Change Budget. The programme combined low-interest loans of up to AUD10 000, a green reward to the value of AUD 50, as well as detailed household sustainability assessments. The Loans component was removed from 22 March 2010. The AUD 50 Green Reward is being provided to households who had assessments undertaken up until 11 May 2010 (approximately 300,000 households). Homeowners looking to save energy and water had access to a qualified assessor to evaluate their current energy and water use…

National Code for Wind Farm Construction

Recognising the increasing contribution wind energy is making to Australian energy markets, the Australian Government initiated the development of a federal code for wind farm development and construction. The Government released the National Code for Wind Farms discussion paper in May 2006. This process was instigated to replace state and territory codes of varying standards. In June 2006 the Government established a stakeholders consultation group following a meeting of Australias environmental ministers. The Government then decided in June 2008 to investigate impediments to the uptake of wind energy, and how these can be addressed, including through a possible national code…

                Renewable Energy Industry Development (REID)

The Renewable Energy Industry Development (REID) programme provided grants to Australian companies who demonstrated that their projects would assist the development of the domestic renewable energy industry. Industry development grants were typically AUD 100,000. Project applicants could not have obtained significant individual financial or commercial benefits and project outcomes were to be disseminated to the wider Australian industry. Targeted at industry associations and community organisations, grants addressed renewable energy market barriers, renewable energy resource assessment, best practice guidelines, training, standard setting and related topics.
                The programme expired in 2007.

                Solar Hot Water Rebate

In July 2007, the Australian federal government introduced a rebate system for the installation of solar and heat pump hot water systems in existing homes. Rebates of AUD1000 are available where the installed hot water system: - replaces an electric storage hot water system; - is purchased and installed after 17 July 2007; - is a solar or heat pump hot water system that is eligible for at least 20 Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) at the time and place of installation; - is installed and has 20 RECs eligibility verified by a suitably qualified person (for example an electrician or plumber); The dwelling must…

                Greenhouse Gas Abatement Programme

The Greenhouse Gas Abatement Programme (GGAP) was an Australian Government initiative to reduce Australias net greenhouse gas emissions by supporting activities likely to result in substantial emission reduction particularly during the period of the Kyoto Protocol (2008-2012). GGAP targetted opportunities for large-scale, cost-effective and sustained abatement across the economy. GGAP supported projects expected to result in quantifiable and additional abatement not expected to occur in the absence of GGAP funding. Priority was given to projects that delivered abatement exceeding 250 000 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2-e) per annum. Three funding rounds of GGAP have been…

                Nigeria

Nigeria is the largest economy and the richest oil resource centre of the African continent. The country also remains the largest gas consumer and producer of West Africa. Notable power sector reforms are underway in Nigeria, including plans for electrification.

How accelerating electrification could strengthen energy security in Southeast Asia

Commentary Electrification is key to energy security and sustainability across Southeast Asia Energy demand is rising rapidly in Southeast Asia, driven by economic growth, industrialisation, urbanisation and rising incomes. Since 2015, energy demand has risen by around 40%, while electricity demand has grown even faster – twice as fast as overall energy use. Although renewables have increased significantly over the past decade, fossil fuels have continued to dominate, meeting over 70% of energy demand growth across this period, with oil accounting for nearly half of total energy consumption.Rapid energy demand growth and continued dependence on fossil fuels brings greater exposure…
