Japan’s history of energy efficiency policies
…policies. Oil savings in Japan were equivalent to more than 20% of its oil imports in 2016 and significantly improved the country’s energy security. More generally, between 2011 and 2018, Japan’s total final energy consumption decreased by 8%, while GDP increased by 8%, resulting in a 15% reduction in the energy intensity of the economy. Energy efficiency gains have been driven by successful policy, including efficiency standards for products and vehicles, as well as energy performance requirements for industry, based on benchmarking. Japan places strong emphasis on efficiency improvements to achieve its energy security and energy transition goals.

National Renewable Action Plan (NREAP)
…renewable energy targets:
Overall target: 34% of share of energy generated from renewable sources in gross final energy consumption;
Heating and cooling: 33% of heat consumption met by renewable sources;
Electricity: 71% of electricity demand met by electricity generated from renewable energy sources;
Transport: 11.5% of energy demand met by renewable energy sources.
In order to achieve above enlisted targets Austria established comprehensive legislative and administrative framework regulating and facilitating sustainable development of renewable energies. This framework is being supported by structure of various ficial, fiscal, research and promotional measures and incentives.

Austrian Energy Efficiency Law
In Austria, the EED is implemented by the Austrian Energy Efficiency Act. Within this act, Austria is increasing its energy efficiency efforts aiming to a final energy consumption of 1050 PJ by 2020. Furthermore, until 2020 cumulative energy savings of 310 PJ have to be achieved. These targets have to be reached by an obligation scheme for energy distributors (with a sales volume of more than 25 GWh to final energy consumers) contributing with energy efficiency measures up to (cumulative) 159 PJ and by so-called strategic measures by public authorities with up to (cumulative) 151 PJ till 2020. Strategic…
