Policy and financing momentum sustain CCUS progress despite setbacks
CCUS Projects Database 2026 commentary Efforts to expand carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS) took some important steps forward in 2025. Despite delays and cancellations in some areas, projects reached notable milestones in key markets, while growing financing provided further momentum.CCUS deployment in Europe saw a step-change as the world’s first dedicated carbon dioxide CO2 storage hub began operating in Norway. Major projects were also commissioned in China and North America, and the construction of new facilities began in eight countries worldwide. The newest annual update to the IEA’s CCUS Project Database – which incorporates developments between…

Tracking SDG7: The Energy Progress Report, 2025
Tracking SDG7: The Energy Progress Report, 2025 Since its inception in 2018, Tracking SDG 7: The Energy Progress Report has become the global reference for information on progress toward the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 7 (SDG 7) of the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The aim of SDG 7 is to “ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy for all.” This report therefore summarizes global progress on electricity access, clean cooking, renewable energy, energy efficiency, and international cooperation to advance SDG 7. It presents updated statistics for each of the indicators and provides policy insights on…

Gas Market Report, Q2-2025
Global natural gas demand continued to expand through the 2024/25 heating season, with growth primarily driven by Europe and North America. Underground storage facilities and reserve mechanisms provided crucial flexibility to the gas system and ensured stable and secure gas supplies over the 2024/25 heating season. In 2025, global gas demand growth is forecast to slow from the previous year amid tighter market conditions, while heightened macroeconomic uncertainties may also weigh on demand.Low gas storage levels and reduced piped gas exports from Russia to the European Union are expected to keep market fundamentals tight. Supported by higher…

Indicators Handbook for Just and Inclusive Energy Transitions
Global Commission on People-Centred Clean Energy Transitions: Designing for Fairness The Indicators Handbook is based on the voluntary G20 Principles for Just and Inclusive Transitions, endorsed by G20 leaders in November 2024. The principles, which reflect varying perspectives, contexts and experiences, form a framework for approaching transitions that maximises benefits and mitigates the risk of unintended consequences. Designed as a technical resource, the Indicators Handbook provides guidance for governments and other stakeholders on identifying relevant indicators as a first step towards tracking policy design and implementation in line with the G20 Principles for Just and Inclusive Transitions. The Handbook…

Hydrogen
Low-emissions hydrogen projects are set to grow strongly despite wave of cancellations and persistent challenges
Worldwide hydrogen demand increased to almost 100 million tonnes in 2024, up 2% from 2023 and in line with overall energy demand growth. The vast majority of this was met by hydrogen produced from fossil fuels without measures in place to capture associated emissions. Sectors that have traditionally used hydrogen, such as oil refining and industry, remained the biggest consumers.
The uptake of low-emissions hydrogen is not yet meeting the expectations set by industry and governments in recent years, especially in light of…

Energy Island funding
Denmark plans to build two world-first "energy islands" with a minimum capacity of 4 GW to convert low-carbon electricity into green hydrogen and synthetic fuels, supporting its 2050 carbon neutrality goal. One of the islands, located in the North Sea, will be co-owned by the government and private partners, with strategic collaborations involving Germany, Belgium, and Luxembourg. A 3 GW offshore wind island near Jutland, expandable to 10 GW, has also been approved with a total investment of DKK 210 billion (€28 billion).

Green Transport Agreement - Development in charging infrastructure
Denmark's government provides subsidies and grants to support the development of charging infrastructure for electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles. These include financial incentives from the Green Transport Agreement, subsidies for public and private charging points, and support for operators like Clever, E.ON, and Spirii to expand their networks. Local governments can also apply for funding to develop regional charging infrastructure, ensuring widespread accessibility and promoting the transition to greener transportation.

Grants for green projects optimising the energy consumption of public buildings
Denmark announced its specific plans to allocate funds for energy renovation projects and digital solutions or software that can monitor and optimise energy consumption (e.g. help financing the re-insulation of libraries or the conversion to heat pumps, etc.). Municipalities and regions could apply for the first DKK 150 million (over EUR 20 million) from 1 November until 8 November 2021. The second call for applications will open in 2022.

Dutch-Danish cooperation MoU to accelerate the green transition
Denmark and the Netherlands have set for joint cooperation to ensure the development of the green transition amidst the pandemic crisis. Focus areas include knowledge sharing in green technologies (hydrogen and wind power) and reinforcing trade partnerships to meet each other's 2030 climate targets.
The overall motivation for the agreement was to create an official framework that would allow for a deepening of existing bilateral collaboration on green topics, like clean heating. Furthermore, the agreement points to new areas, which might be included in a broader energy cooperation between the Netherlands and Denmark.
A non-exhaustive list of cooperation…
