                Global Hydrogen Review 2026

Background information The conflict in the Middle East is impacting global supplies of hydrogen and hydrogen derivatives such as fertilisers. Given these circumstances, low-emissions hydrogen and hydrogen-based fuels – which can be produced domestically and help diversify energy supply – are gaining more attention. The sixth edition of the Global Hydrogen Review takes stock of the sector, with a focus on progress to date in adopting low-emissions hydrogen and its derivatives. It also explores the challenges ahead at a moment of growing energy sector uncertainty. This year’s report includes new analysis on the cost that users of low-emissions hydrogen…

Law No. 37/2025 on the energy performance of buildings

This law requires from 2026 all new and renovated buildings to meet minimum energy performance standards and use renewable energy. Additionally, new public buildings must be emission-free by 2027, with all new buildings meeting this requirement by 2030.

                Integrated resource plan (2025)

The plan outlines a USD 121 billion (R2.23 trillion) investment plan to drive the government's effort to grow the economy and transition toward a Net Zero electricity sector by 2050. It plans to increase renewables from approximately 17 GW to more than 45 GW by 2030, to anticipate a phased decline of the coal fleet from 42 GW in 2024 to 28 GW by 2034 and to connect new generation source by 14,494 km of new lines by 2034.

Agreement on Energy for Sustainable Growth

In 2013 the Energy Agreement for Sustainable Growth was concluded with over 40 parties participating. This contained ambitions for 2020 and 2023 in the fields of greenhouse gas reduction, renewable energy and energy efficiency/savings. This agreement formed the foundation of many actions by parties in society and for instruments and changes in instruments by the government.

This negotiated agreement to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and increase energy efficiency is a framework action package, including a package of some 160 measures and actions to be implemented by the participating parties. A Standing committee with representatives of the group of parties…
