                Heat Pump Deployment Promotion Plan

The Heat Pump Deployment Promotion Plan promotes heat pumps as a core technology for replacing fossil-fuel boilers and electrifying heating and cooling demand. The government set a target to deploy 3.5 million heat pumps by 2035 and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 5.18 million tonnes. It plans to introduce a separate electricity tariff not subject to progressive residential rates, expand public subsidies and support deployment in detached houses, villages, commercial buildings, public facilities and industrial sites. The 2026 budget for heat pump support was reported at KRW 58.3 billion, reflecting a shift from pilot deployment toward…

What’s driving the surge in energy jobs?

The global energy sector is adding jobs twice as fast as the overall economy. But where is this growth coming from? And with skills shortages increasing, can it keep up the momentum? In this episode, IEA analysts Elspeth Hathaway and Rebecca Ruff – two authors of the World Energy Employment report – dive into the latest data. They talk about who works in the energy sector, what’s been driving the strong rise in energy jobs globally, and how to tackle growing skills gaps, which could otherwise complicate efforts by countries to meet rising energy demand securely and affordably.

Since 1 January 2008, the Ministry of Environment established a new financial incentive programme to encourage investments in high efficiency housing, energy-efficient refurbishment of existing housing, the installation of renewable energy sources and energy-efficient equipment, as well as energy performance evaluation and advice services (required for undertaking refurbishment). For new housing up to 200m2 for individual houses and up to 120m2 for multi-family buildings, grants are provided for the construction of low-energy consumption homes (between EUR 21 and EUR 45/m2) and passive houses (between EUR 57 and EUR160/m2). Construction must begin in 2007 and…

The state of play for hydrogen

Enthusiasm for hydrogen has surged in recent years. The most abundant element in the universe, it offers a wide range of potential energy applications, and many governments now see it as an important part of the solution to their energy challenges.Much of the focus has been on low‑emissions hydrogen. But building markets around a still‑emerging technology is far from straightforward. In this episode, IEA Energy Technology Analyst José Bermudez explores the obstacles that have slowed progress – and discusses why production could still grow strongly between now and 2030.
