                Breakthrough Agenda Report 2022

Background information The Breakthrough Agenda Report 2022 is a new report by the International Energy Agency (IEA), the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) and the UN Climate Change High-Level Champions, focused on supporting stronger international collaboration to drive faster reductions in global greenhouse gas emissions. Without international cooperation, the crucial global transition to net zero emissions could be delayed by decades. The faster the transition advances, the faster it will deliver clean technologies at lower cost, making them available for all. This is all the more urgent in the context of recent sharp spikes in energy and food prices around…

Annual report 2023 The Clean Energy Transitions Programme (CETP) is the IEA’s flagship initiative for accelerating progress toward a global net zero energy system. Launched at the 2017 IEA Ministerial to leverage the Agency’s expertise, insights and influence, the programme has provided world-class analysis, technical assistance and capacity building to support the most ambitious reorientation of the world’s energy systems this century. The CETP’s work is structured across three pillars of activity, with a particular focus on emerging markets and developing economies. The first of these focuses on supporting emerging and developing countries to establish…

Meeting Power System Flexibility Needs in China by 2030

A market-based policy toolkit for the 15th Five-Year Plan The People’s Republic of China is deploying record levels of wind and solar PV, challenging the flexibility of its power system. At the same time, China has been making big steps towards implementing markets, and the goals announced in 2020 of carbon dioxide emissions peaking before 2030 and carbon neutrality before 2060 have added momentum to expand their footprint. This report investigates the evolving flexibility requirements of China’s power system as it transitions towards a cleaner energy mix. The analysis aims to present a market-based policy…

Net Zero Roadmap: A Global Pathway to Keep the 1.5 °C Goal in Reach

2023 Update In May 2021, the IEA published its landmark report Net Zero Emissions by 2050: A Roadmap for the Global Energy Sector. The report set out a narrow but feasible pathway for the global energy sector to contribute to the Paris Agreement’s goal of limiting the rise in global temperatures to 1.5 °C above pre-industrial levels. The Net Zero Roadmap quickly became an important benchmark for policy makers, industry, the financial sector and civil society.Since the report was released, many changes have taken place, notably amid the global energy crisis triggered by Russia’s invasion…
