IEA Contributions to the G20 in 2023
…5 °C. He encouraged all countries to consider the IEA’s Net Zero by 2050 report, the need to triple renewable power capacity and double energy efficiency improvement by 2030, and the need to consume energy more sustainably, as demonstrated by India’s Lifestyle for Environment (LiFE) initiative. Dr. Birol also met with Ministers from several IEA Association countries, including Brazil, Kenya, Indonesia, Singapore, Argentina and South Africa.India’s Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas hosted a side event for the soon to be launched Global Biofuels Alliance. The head of the IEA’s Renewable Energy Division, Dr. Paolo…

…sector identified within the Strategy. Panelists will discuss, using a range of examples and success cases, ways in which sustainable energy can be developed across heating and cooling applications, and the roles of a range of key actors in achieving the aims of the Strategy. The conference begins with opening remarks from the IEA’s Executive Director, Dr. Fatih Birol, and the Minister of Energy and Mining of Chile, Juan Carlos Jobet, followed by a keynote on international trends in efficient, low-carbon heating and cooling systems by Dr. Brian Motherway, head of the Energy Efficiency Division at the IEA.

Super-efficient Equipment Appliance Deployment (SEAD) Initiative Workshop for East Africa
…accounting for 41% of existing energy-related CO2 emissions. Power demand will continue to grow rapidly and will rise by 60% globally by 2040 based on today’s policy ambitions. Energy efficiency is arguably the single most important lever in reducing emissions to meet our Paris goals accounting for approximately half of all emissions abatement to 2030 in the IEA’s Sustainable Development Scenario. Over the next 30 years, the cumulative energy use of industrial electric motors, lighting and cooling (air conditioning and refrigeration) is set to grow substantially. These products already account for over 40% of current global electricity consumption. The policy tools that can curb this growth cost effectively namely…

Supporting the Deployment of Low-Carbon Technologies in the ETC and SEMED regions
BackgroundThe increased deployment of energy efficiency, renewable energy and other low-carbon and climate technologies can bring a range of valuable co-benefits. These benefits include the more effective management of natural resources, enhanced national energy security, reduced local air pollution and related health benefits, increased access to modern energy services for national populations, stimulation of sustainable economic development and reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. Accelerating the deployment of low-carbon technologies is contingent on policies that facilitate innovation and relieve barriers to implementation. In many countries, including those that are the target of this workshop, the uptake of such technologies may sometimes be hindered…

…New Energy FinanceSpeakers Marc-Alain BEHAR, Group Marketing Manager, Solaire DirectFelix Grölman, CEO, Grundgrün Energie GmbHSteve Sawyer, Secretary General, Global Wind Energy CouncilSession 2: Adapting liberalised power markets - Minor tweak or major overhaul?Wholesale market liberalisation took place in the past decades to increase efficiency of system operations and investments. However, experience with liberalised power markets has been mixed. This session explored relevant examples of where liberalised power markets have been changed or where changes are currently under discussion to better accommodate renewable energies:ModeratorStefan Ulreich, E.ON SESpeakers Manuel Baritaud, Senior Energy Analyst, IEA Marco Nicolosi, Director, Connect Energy…

Energy Efficiency 2020 Tracking policy responses to the crisis
…energy efficiency projects are labour-intensive, meaning for every dollar spent, a large amount goes into labour, helping to maintain existing jobs and create new jobs quickly. In some sectors, where skills barriers are minimal, energy efficiency investments can also provide employment for displaced workers. Most of the investment in energy efficiency results in energy savings and therefore monetary savings. Crucially, this means the cost per tonne of greenhouse gas emissions abated is often negative, as shown below under the modelled abatement of the measures in the Sustainable Recovery Plan. Spending on efficiency is becoming a large part of governments…

The value of urgent action on energy efficiency Highlights
…increase in global energy related CO2 emissions, around 2 Gt to about 36 Gt of CO2, more than offsetting the decline in 2020. This followed an increase of about 10 Gt, or 45% between 2000 and 2019. During this period, the energy intensity of the global economy improved by around a quarter resulting in avoided emissions of about 8 Gt CO2 in 2019. This means that energy intensity improvements in the economy are offsetting almost half of the emissions growth that could have happened. Faster action on efficiency-related measures can avoid an extra 95 EJ of energy demand by…

Heat pump sales increased by over 10% globally in 2022, and by nearly 40% in Europe. The share of EVs in global car sales in 2022 was 14% and is expected to rise to 18% in 2023.6. Efficiency investment is expected to reach record levels in 2023, to over USD 600 billion, though growth is slowing due to increased cost of capital. An energy efficient future 7. Doubling efficiency improvement to above 4%…
