Boosting Efficiency in Latin America
…important to consider short- and long- term solutions to ease existing pain and reduce risks over time. While much attention focuses on securing energy supplies, it is equally important to take a hard look at the role of more efficient and flexible demand in securing affordable, reliable energy. There are several reasons for this. First, one of the fastest and cheapest options for short-term emergency situations is to reduce demand. Second, investments in more efficient technologies and practices can reduce risk over time while improving access to energy services, saving money and supporting efficient, less costly energy systems. Third…

Energy Efficiency Policy Recommendations for Latin America and the Caribbean
…support of more than 50 energy efficiency experts from Latin America and the Caribbean, together with the United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (UN ECLAC), and the Ministry of Energy and Mines of Peru. The 20 detailed recommendations span five sectors and cover policies ranging from measures to implement mandatory minimum energy performance standards for buildings and appliances, to improve transport system planning and efficiency and promote energy management systems for industry. They are tailored to regional barriers and opportunities. The IEA has also worked with regional partners to develop energy efficiency policy recommendations for Southeast…

GlobalABC Regional Roadmap for Buildings and Construction in Latin America 2020-2050
…The roadmap covers eight themes: urban planning, new buildings, existing buildings, building operations, appliances and systems, materials, resilience, and clean energy. For each of these themes, priority actions related to policy and technology are identified as well as other enabling activities, including capacity building and finance. This Roadmap was developed in collaboration with the GlobalABC and United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). Several hundred building sector actors from across the region participated through consultations in webinars, questionnaires and workshops. Executive summary With the Paris Agreement countries have agreed to a common goal of maintaining the global temperature increase to well below…

Accelerating Renewables Growth in ASEAN
…Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) have adopted net zero emissions targets, and recent national energy plans outline substantially higher ambitions for renewable capacity. Achieving these goals will require timely, sustained and strongly co-ordinated policy action to unlock the scale of renewable energy deployment needed by 2030 and beyond. This report examines the key challenges hindering a faster capacity deployment of renewable power in ASEAN and outlines potential policy solutions informed by successful international experience. It also provides an assessment of renewable-energy auction design options, an increasingly important procurement mechanism that is expected to account for around 60…

Integrating Solar and Wind in Southeast Asia
…exposes countries to volatile fuel prices, potential supply disruptions and rising emissions. At the same time, the region possesses vast and diverse renewable resource potential. Variable renewable energy (VRE) - solar and wind - are now among the most cost-competitive generation options and are playing an increasingly important role in the region’s power sector. VRE presents an opportunity for the region to meet rising demand, support energy security, affordability and climate goals. However, integrating higher shares of VRE can present technical and regulatory challenges that require changes to system operation and planning. This report provides a comprehensive assessment of the…

Clean Energy Transitions Programme 2023
…and developing economies. The first of these focuses on supporting emerging and developing countries to establish clean energy transition goals, in line with the objectives of the 2015 Paris Agreement and the Sustainable Development Goals established by the United Nations. The second pillar centres on facilitating coordination among multilateral organisations such as the Group of 20 (G20) and UN-affiliated collaborations. The final pillar showcases the IEA’s work at a global level to enable and accelerate clean energy transitions. The CETP Annual Report 2023 provides an overview of the programme’s achievements over the past year. The remarkable impact…

Financing the Modernisation of Power Systems Beyond Coal
The role of transition credits in Southeast Asia Coal is a central component of power systems in Southeast Asia, even as governments have committed to reducing coal‑related emissions. Rapid electricity demand growth, alongside coal’s role in system adequacy, reliability and energy security, complicates efforts to accelerate coal transitions. Recent volatility in international gas markets has reinforced the short‑term economic and security value of existing coal assets, adding complexity to national transition strategies. The region’s young coal fleet also implies substantial long‑term emissions if plants continue operating at current utilisation rates.Against this backdrop, new approaches are being explored…

Climate Impacts on Latin American Hydropower
Hydropower is the main source for electricity generation in Latin America, accounting for 45% of the total electricity supply from the region. By 2040, it is likely to remain significant or potentially increase, supporting the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and carbon emissions reduction in the energy sector. However, climate change poses an increasing challenge to Latin American hydropower with rising temperatures, fluctuating rainfall patterns, melting glaciers, and increasing occurrence of extreme weather events. This report aims to support Latin American hydropower in coping with the adverse impacts of climate change and developing a tailored set of climate resilience…

A Vision for Clean Cooking Access for All
World Energy Outlook Special Report Nearly one in three people, the vast majority of them in the poorest regions of the world, still lack access to clean cooking facilities, with major ramifications for public health, local environments and socio-economic development. Inhaling hazardous smoke from traditional stoves and open fires causes millions of premature deaths annually, disproportionately affecting women and children. The arduous task of collecting firewood also hinders educational and employment opportunities and strains natural resources – compounding costs for vulnerable populations. The International Energy Agency (IEA) and the African Development Bank Group have joined forces to address this critical…

Financing the ASEAN Power Grid
The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) has a long history of electricity system connectivity, and the development of the ASEAN Power Grid (APG) is central to achieving a sustainable, secure and affordable energy transition across the region. Delivering the APG will require a significant step‑change in investment over the coming 15 years, and unlocking financing from a diverse range of sources will be essential for this to happen. Yet financing approaches and business models have not evolved at the pace required to support an increasingly ambitious and complex pipeline of interconnector projects. This report examines how interconnectors are approached…
