…the Energy Transition Plan in Uganda and the establishment of regulations for the spot electricity market in China. These and other policies announced in 2023 were all closely aligned with IEA recommendations and reinforced the Agency’s status as a trusted advisor to emerging and developing countries. The programme’s accomplishments also included the publication of the IEA’s first Latin America Energy Outlook and a World Energy Outlook Special Report on universal access to clean cooking in Africa. Additional highlights included annual updates of our World Energy Investment and World Energy Employment reports along with many others. The programme…

A Vision for Clean Cooking Access for All

World Energy Outlook Special Report Nearly one in three people, the vast majority of them in the poorest regions of the world, still lack access to clean cooking facilities, with major ramifications for public health, local environments and socio-economic development. Inhaling hazardous smoke from traditional stoves and open fires causes millions of premature deaths annually, disproportionately affecting women and children. The arduous task of collecting firewood also hinders educational and employment opportunities and strains natural resources – compounding costs for vulnerable populations. The International Energy Agency (IEA) and the African Development Bank Group have joined forces to address this critical…

GlobalABC Regional Roadmap for Buildings and Construction in Latin America 2020-2050

…a greater demand for energy services (IEA, 2019a). By 2040, Latin America’s population is expected to grow by a further 20% and could increase its economic wealth by 83%. Decarbonising buildings across the entire life cycle would require a transformation of the buildings and construction sector. Reaching net-zero operational and embodied carbon emission buildings is possible, but requires clear and ambitious policy signals to drive a range of measures including passive building design, material efficiency, low-carbon materials, efficient building envelope measures, and highly efficient lighting and appliances. According to the World Energy Outlook, energy efficiency and decarbonisation…

The Future of Electricity in the Middle East and North Africa

…region’s climate, characterised by extreme heat and water scarcity, implies that reliable and resilient electricity systems are integral to meeting soaring demand for cooling and water desalination. This outlook provides an unprecedented regional overview of demand patterns for cooling and water desalination including country-level data. How countries across the region meet this increased demand will have profound implications for the region’s economic future but also for global energy markets. This report also explores the challenges and opportunities to sustainably meet electricity demand growth by exploring the potential of both demand and supply side policies and measures.  Translation

                Boosting Efficiency in Latin America

…flexible demand in securing affordable, reliable energy. There are several reasons for this. First, one of the fastest and cheapest options for short-term emergency situations is to reduce demand. Second, investments in more efficient technologies and practices can reduce risk over time while improving access to energy services, saving money and supporting efficient, less costly energy systems. Third, managing demand by improving efficiency and making loads more flexible is key to cost-effectively meeting decarbonisation goals. Decades of policies and programmes have delivered energy savings around the world. As a result, energy systems are more resilient, bills are lower…

Climate Impacts on Latin American Hydropower

Hydropower is the main source for electricity generation in Latin America, accounting for 45% of the total electricity supply from the region. By 2040, it is likely to remain significant or potentially increase, supporting the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and carbon emissions reduction in the energy sector. However, climate change poses an increasing challenge to Latin American hydropower with rising temperatures, fluctuating rainfall patterns, melting glaciers, and increasing occurrence of extreme weather events. This report aims to support Latin American hydropower in coping with the adverse impacts of climate change and developing a tailored set of climate resilience…
