                Gaining an Edge

…creation, energy efficiency helps firms compete amid high costs, growing demand, and rising trade pressures. In today’s global context, energy efficiency is not only a matter of energy policy, but also of economic policy. The report analyses historical progress in industrial energy efficiency and its role in enhancing industrial competitiveness. It includes comparisons of firm-level energy efficiency, identifying performance gaps and opportunities for further improvement. Drawing on a new IEA survey of 1 000 firms across 14 countries, it provides insights into industry perspectives. The report also highlights emerging opportunities in energy efficiency markets and offers recommendations for policymakers…

                Jobs

…of efficient equipment. Key analysis A review of studies shows that an investment of USD 1 million can create and maintain for one year between 5 and 22 jobs in the buildings sector, between 4 and 14 jobs in the industrial sector, and between 5 and 15 jobs in the transport sector. A closer look at job location Energy efficiency spurs job creation at the local level while creating economy-wide gains. While jobs in industrial efficiency and manufacturing tend to be more concentrated, sectors such as buildings, which require the deployment of technicians to install and repair equipment or energy auditors, can also boost…

                Competitiveness

…other benefits, from improved resource use to higher productivity Key analysis Energy intensity improvements have enabled industries to produce 19% more value added with the same amount of energy now, compared to the year 2000. In the European Union, manufacturing industries produce 50% more value added with 25% less energy than in 2000. A closer look at energy efficiency in businesses Energy management – a well-recognised strategic approach of adjusting and optimising energy consumption – is one of the key levers for industrial competitiveness. By embedding a culture of continuous improvement, firms can achieve significant reductions in energy costs, as well…

                Emission reductions

…to clean cooking, air pollution is linked to around 3.7 million premature deaths a year. Replacing open fires and inefficient stoves with cleaner, more modern stoves and fuels reduces household air pollution and improves efficiency. Indoor air pollution from liquid petroleum gas (LPG) cookstoves is only around 5% of pollution from traditional biomass, while being over three times more efficient. Switching from LPG to electric cooking would further reduce indoor air pollution by 25% and is over 1.5 times more efficient.   Need more information? IEA Support to Accelerating Renewable Energy Permitting (ARPE)

…for renewable energy in the overall energy mix to 42.5% (with the ambition of 45%) – up from 40% in the 2021 proposal. Achieving this will require more than 1 200 gigawatts (GW) of installed cumulative renewable power capacity by 2030, almost double that of 2023.The key barrier to rapid renewables deployment in many EU Member states is lengthy and complex administrative procedures related to project permitting. In May 2022, the European Commission released recommendations on permitting, including on identification of renewable acceleration areas (RAAs) where shortened and simplified permitting can be applied. In November 2023, the revised Renewable Energy Directive…

…energy transition minerals mining and biodiversity conservation. Natural Resources Canada and the IEA partnered to develop this analytical framework capable of highlighting where solar, wind and critical mineral development risk overlapping with important areas for biodiversity conservation around the world, building on Canada’s leadership in providing open-source geospatial information on land use, resource distribution and ecosystems at risk. The new tool compiles 15 global geospatial datasets covering the resource distribution for solar, wind and mineral deposits with datasets on biodiversity and other land-use designations to help resolve competition between various land uses. This analysis is not intended…

Southeast Asia Indicators Handbook for Just and Inclusive Transitions

Energy demand in Southeast Asia is growing, driven by rapidly growing population and economies, industrialisation and urbanisation. Many countries in the region have set out their own national decarbonisation targets and clean energy transitions commitments.Clean energy transitions in the region present unique opportunities to deliver broad socio-economic benefits, beyond emissions reductions, such as the creation of new decent jobs, economic diversification, reduced energy poverty and improved air quality. Tracking these benefits can help ensure that all parts of society benefit from these changes. In 2024, G20 leaders endorsed ten voluntary G20 Principles for Just and Inclusive Energy Transitions…

                Accelerating Renewables Growth in ASEAN

…Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) have adopted net zero emissions targets, and recent national energy plans outline substantially higher ambitions for renewable capacity. Achieving these goals will require timely, sustained and strongly co-ordinated policy action to unlock the scale of renewable energy deployment needed by 2030 and beyond. This report examines the key challenges hindering a faster capacity deployment of renewable power in ASEAN and outlines potential policy solutions informed by successful international experience. It also provides an assessment of renewable-energy auction design options, an increasingly important procurement mechanism that is expected to account for around 60…
