Is the biofuel industry approaching a feedstock crunch?
…the majority of biodiesel, renewable diesel and biojet fuel consumption growth. Combined, demand for these fuels increases by 44% or 21 billion litres in our main case over 2022-2027. In the United States, the renewable fuel standard, state-level low-carbon fuel standards and the IRA’s tax credits boost demand for renewable diesel and biojet fuel. Most requirements are met with domestic production from a mixture of feedstocks (e.g. soybean oil, rapeseed oil, corn oil, used cooking oil and animal fats). In Europe also, consumption of renewable diesel and biojet fuel increase the most. Total demand growth…

Poland 2022
…fastest growing markets for distributed solar PV in Europe, and it has developed a strong programme to drive offshore wind deployment. Poland has also taken important steps to improve energy security, like diversifying energy imports away from Russia. However, the country’s energy mix is still dominated by fossil fuels. All sectors have considerable work ahead to meet targets for increasing the share of renewables, lowering energy demand and reducing emissions. In this report, the IEA provides a range of energy policy recommendations to help Poland smoothly manage the transition to an efficient and flexible low-carbon energy system. Energy Policies of IEA Countries: Poland 2016 Review
…2017. The country’s new energy plan will prioritise long-term energy security, placing a strong emphasis on reducing greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution, increasing energy efficiency and decarbonising the transport system. Nuclear power could play a significant role in the country’s energy supply. While the country has experienced strong growth in renewable energy over the past decade, the future looks uncertain. Given these possible changes, the new energy strategy will require significant investments to reduce the share of carbon-intensive power plants and increase the share of low-carbon energy. While Polish energy infrastructure has been modernised…

Implementing Clean Energy Transitions
…in order to assess where gaps may arise and help governments and policymakers to explore other international policy experiences. The library groups transport policies within three overarching categories:Regulation, incl. standards and mandates: This includes fuel-economy standards, emission standards, blending mandates, charging standards and EV mandates. Incentives: This includes for both cases incentives for electric vehicle, modal shift, biofuels and scrappage schemes. Fuel excise taxes and carbon pricing are also included in this category.Information: This includes policies and initiatives focused on informing consumers, training, and networking. This library builts on the joint IEA/IRENA Policy and Measures database…

Renewables 2020
…renewables in the electricity heat and transport sectors. Executive summary Renewables’ resilience is driven by the electricity sector In sharp contrast to all other fuels, renewables used for generating electricity will grow by almost 7% in 2020. Global energy demand is set to decline 5% – but long-term contracts, priority access to the grid and continuous installation of new plants are all underpinning strong growth in renewable electricity. This more than compensates for declines in bioenergy for industry and biofuels for transport – mostly the result of lower economic activity. The net result is an overall increase of 1% in renewable…

Sustainable Production of Second-Generation Biofuels
Sustainable Production of Second-Generation Biofuels This study aims to identify opportunities and constraints related to the potential future production of second-generation biofuels in major economies and developing countries, and to examine under which conditions the new fuels could be produced sustainably in these countries. The report identifies global drivers for second-generation biofuel development, discusses projections on biomass potentials and assesses the potential of agricultural and forestry residues for the sustainable production of lignocellulosic biofuels.

Biofuel Policy in Brazil, India and the United States
Insights for the Global Biofuel Alliance As part of its G20 presidency, India has proposed a Global Biofuel Alliance (GBA) to bring countries together to expand and create new markets for sustainable biofuels. The sharing of best practices, the technical support and the capacity building that the GBA would bring are welcome additions to international efforts to expand sustainable biofuel production and use, a key step to decarbonising transportation and heat services with secure and affordable energy supplies. This report aims to inform and focus the Alliance’s work by sharing biofuel policy insights from Brazil, India and the United…

…supply. In addition, the government has announced an ambitious nuclear programme by 2030. Other achievements include energy intensity improvements, an increased share of renewables, and a stronger focus on energy R&D. Despite these positive developments, there is room for improving Poland’s energy strategy. First, a more integrated energy and climate policy is needed to put Poland firmly on a low-carbon path while enhancing energy security. Second, energy policy could put more emphasis on promoting competition to make the energy markets more efficient. Decarbonising Poland’s power sector will be a particularly significant challenge requiring huge investments. Coal…

Clean Energy Transitions Programme 2023
…global level to enable and accelerate clean energy transitions. The CETP Annual Report 2023 provides an overview of the programme’s achievements over the past year. The remarkable impact of the CETP’s work during this period was reflected in several notable achievements, including the announcement of a new set of fuel standards for trucks in Indonesia, the Energy Transition Plan in Uganda and the establishment of regulations for the spot electricity market in China. These and other policies announced in 2023 were all closely aligned with IEA recommendations and reinforced the Agency’s status as a trusted advisor to…
