E4 Country Profile: Energy Efficiency in India

Overview India’s final energy consumption increased by 50% from 2007 to 2017, with growth across all sectors, but with the largest increases in the industrial and transport sectors. It has seen the highest growth of primary energy among G20 countries, but still has the lowest GDP per capita. The Government of India has made impressive progress in recent years in increasing citizens’ access to electricity and clean cooking. The priority is now shifting towards energy security and affordability as demonstrated by India’s successful energy market reforms. Energy efficiency will remain important in order to realise these priorities as…

                India Energy Outlook 2021

…massive expansion in renewable sources of energy, led by solar power. The gains for Indian citizens and their quality of life have been tangible. However, the Covid-19 crisis has complicated efforts to resolve other pressing problems. These include a lack of reliable electricity supply for many consumers; a continued reliance on solid biomass, mainly firewood, as a cooking fuel for some 660 million people; financially ailing electricity distribution companies, and air quality that has made Indian cities among the most polluted in the world. …and the scope for further growth in energy demand and infrastructure is huge India…

                Renewables Integration in India

…renewables increasingly challenge the power system Renewable energy penetration is highly variable by state in India. The share of solar and wind in India’s ten renewables-rich states (Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Telangana, Punjab and Kerala) is significantly higher than the national average of 8.2%. Solar and wind account for around 29% of annual electricity generation in Karnataka, 20% in Rajasthan, 18% in Tamil Nadu and 14% in Gujarat (financial year [FY] 2020/21). India’s renewables-rich states already have a higher share of variable renewable energy (VRE) than most countries…

Air quality and climate policy integration in India

Frameworks to deliver co-benefits Air pollution has emerged as one of India’s gravest social and environmental problems in recent years. At the same time, the country is experiencing signs of a warming climate with potentially devastating effects in the long term. Energy-related fuel combustion is at the heart of both crises. It is a main source of three major air pollutants, NOX, SO2 and PM2.5, and the largest contributor to India’s CO2 emissions. In many locations, concentrations of particulate matter persistently exceed recommended national and international standards with severe implications for public health.
                In 2019…

…even amid considerable volatility in commodity prices. These developments have intensified the scrutiny on the returns associated with the Indian RE sector. To shed light on these matters, the Clean Energy Investment Trends 2021 report analyses project-level equity returns expectations associated with plain vanilla assets over the period July 2020 - June 2021 as well those corresponding to select hybrid projects. It endeavours to contextualise these returns expectations by comparing them with those in other geographies and examines their sensitivities to solar photovoltaic (PV) module prices, which are now subject to increased volatility. The report also examines land-related challenges…

…It also summarises IEA activities related to clean energy transitions at a global level, and introduces new and innovative analyses and resources produced throughout the year.
The report initially provides an overview of the CETP’s objectives, then presents highlights of activities and achievements for each priority country (Brazil, the People’s Republic of China. India, Indonesia, Mexico and South Africa), each priority region (Africa, Latin America and Southeast Asia), and globally. Foreword With the CETP as a concrete illustration of our collective willingness and capacity to accelerate the pace of change toward the sustainable energy systems of the future…

                Covid-19 impact on electricity

Updated through the end of 2020 In light of the extraordinary impact of the Covid-19 pandemic and resulting lockdown measures on the energy system, the IEA is publishing the most up-to-date possible electricity data. This report includes data through the end of 2020. Impact of lockdown measures Electricity demand dropped quickly across Europe and India with confinement measures but steadily recovered as measures were gradually softened. In India, recovery seemed faster and stronger than in EU countries. The end of the year was marked by a recovery of electricity demand, now above 2019 levels after weather adjustment…

Unlocking the Economic Potential of Rooftop Solar PV in India

                …quick acceleration of RTS deployment?
                5. How can residential and small or medium-sized enterprise (SME) consumers be effectively encouraged to invest in RTS?
                6. How can a holistic policy approach for all distributed energy resources (DERs) be adopted to maximise the value of RTS in combination with electric vehicles (EVs) and storage? Executive summary The rooftop solar photovoltaic (RTS) sector plays a crucial role in achieving India’s ambitious renewable energy targets by 2022 and beyond. However, the progress of residential, commercial and industrial applications has been slow compared with utility-scale solar PV and onshore wind power. Policy…

The Potential of Behavioural Interventions for Optimising Energy Use at Home

…behaviour and encourage investments in structural improvements. This article focuses on the potential for enhancing energy efficiency with policies and programmes designed to educate consumers and encourage them to alter their daily habits – without resorting to large-scale structural improvements. This focus is motivated by the observation that interventions aimed at promoting behavioural change are often cheaper to implement relative to policies that seek to encourage investment. Such measures also tend to be relatively quick to design and implement.  What are behavioural interventions and how can behavioural insights enhance the impact of energy efficiency policy? Behavioural interventions are policies and…

                Fuel economy in India

Market profile and analysis of fuel consumption trends Light-duty vehicle (LDV) sales have contracted in India since 2017, with 3.2 million sold in 2019. Nevertheless, India remains the fifth-largest LDV market. Average fuel consumption of new LDVs dropped from 6.9 litres of gasoline equivalent per 100 kilometres (Lge/100 km) in 2005 to 5.7 Lge/100 km in 2019, which is 20% below the global average. This is mainly attributable to a high share of diesel LDVs and an average LDV weight that is 24% lower than the global average.Fuel economy has improved since…
