Technology Roadmap - China Wind Energy Development Roadmap 2050
Roadmap Technology Roadmap - China Wind Energy Development Roadmap 2050 Developed by the Energy Resource Institute of China’s National Reform and Development Commission (ERI-NDRC), the China Wind Energy Roadmap is the first national roadmap that has been developed by a country with IEA support, drawing from its global roadmap series. The report shows how the People's Republic of China, already the world’s largest wind market, could reach 1 000 gigawatts of wind power by the middle of the century, an achievement that would reduce CO2 emissions by 1.5 gigatonnes per year, or roughly equivalent to the…

Tracking Clean Energy Innovation: Focus on China
…key energy technology areas, such as solar photovoltaics (PV), wind turbines and batteries for electric vehicles (EVs). Looking forward, China’s focus on technology innovation and development is expected to strengthen, notably to deliver on long-term carbon neutrality objectives and position the country in global value chains for clean energy technologies. This has important implications for global policy discussions, as China’s ability to innovate effectively will have implications for global energy transitions. Mapping China’s innovation landscape This report serves as an extension to the chapter on “Innovation for carbon neutrality” in the IEA Energy Sector Roadmap to…

Status of Power System Transformation 2018
…abundant wind and solar energy, the rise of distributed energy resources and increasing digitalisation. These factors are leading to a structural shift in the way power systems are best planned and operated. In particular, they call for increased flexibility of power systems. Power system flexibility encompasses all relevant characteristics of a power system that facilitates the reliable and cost-effective management of variability and uncertainty in both supply and demand.
A lack of system flexibility can reduce the resilience of power systems, or lead to the loss of substantial amounts of clean electricity through curtailment of variable renewable energy sources…

Renewables 2020
…projects compensates for the decline in rooftop additions resulting from individuals and companies reprioritising investments. Wind and solar PV additions are set to jump by 30% in both the People’s Republic of China (“China”) and the United States as developers rush to complete projects before changes in policy take effect. The renewables industry has adapted quickly to the challenges of the Covid crisis. We have revised the IEA forecast for global renewable capacity additions in 2020 upwards by 18% from our previous update in May. Supply chain disruptions and construction delays slowed the progress of renewable energy projects i...

How much will renewable hydrogen production drive demand for new renewable energy capacity by 2027?
…offshore wind projects account for less than 1% of new renewable capacity built for electrolyser plants between 2022 and 2027.China is expected to deploy over 18 GW of dedicated renewable capacity by 2027, prompted by the central government’s goals to decarbonise industry and transport as well as an industrial policy on electrolyser manufacturing. While the central government announced renewable hydrogen production targets in its 14th Five-Year Plan, the main catalysts for growth are provincial and local-level policies. Thus, expansion is expected to be concentrated in provinces with good solar and wind resources and specific targets for…

Meeting Power System Flexibility Needs in China by 2030
A market-based policy toolkit for the 15th Five-Year Plan The People’s Republic of China is deploying record levels of wind and solar PV, challenging the flexibility of its power system. At the same time, China has been making big steps towards implementing markets, and the goals announced in 2020 of carbon dioxide emissions peaking before 2030 and carbon neutrality before 2060 have added momentum to expand their footprint. This report investigates the evolving flexibility requirements of China’s power system as it transitions towards a cleaner energy mix. The analysis aims to present a market-based policy…

Energy Policies of IEA Countries: Sweden 2013 Review
…and no net greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. Although Sweden has decided to allow the replacement of its existing nuclear reactors, further emission reductions will come at a higher cost and require technology change. This means Sweden will need to carefully evaluate the most cost-effective pathways for its transition to a low-carbon economy. The large-scale deployment of renewable and energy technologies in a common Northern European energy market can drive decarbonisation without comprising competitiveness, security of supply and affordability. This review analyses the energy policy challenges currently facing Sweden, and provides studies and recommendations for each sector.

Integrating Distributed Energy Resources in China
Lessons from international experience Like no other country in the world, the People’s Republic of China (hereafter, “China”) is witnessing rapid growth in distributed energy resources (DERs), including rooftop solar photovoltaics, battery storage and electric vehicle (EV) chargers. As China advances towards its carbon peaking and neutrality goals, these resources offer a unique opportunity to support a more flexible, efficient and resilient power system, provided their integration is well-managed.This report analyses recent trends in DER deployment across China and highlights the emerging challenges their growth poses for power system planning and operation, calling for renewed attention to…

…and developing economies. The first of these focuses on supporting emerging and developing countries to establish clean energy transition goals, in line with the objectives of the 2015 Paris Agreement and the Sustainable Development Goals established by the United Nations. The second pillar centres on facilitating coordination among multilateral organisations such as the Group of 20 (G20) and UN-affiliated collaborations. The final pillar showcases the IEA’s work at a global level to enable and accelerate clean energy transitions. The CETP Annual Report 2023 provides an overview of the programme’s achievements over the past year. The remarkable impact…
