Case Study: The National Energy Analytics Research (NEAR) Programme in Australia
…use and how it is changing has limited effective forecasting, policy and management of these changes, resulting in unnecessary costs and market disruption. The need for improved energy data and analysis in Australia was emphasised following a significant investment in energy transmission and distribution infrastructure, which could have been minimised if accurate energy demand was more available.During the late 2000s, Australia’s National Electricity Market experienced a number of peak demand events following extreme climate conditions during summer months. These spikes in demand combined with forecast growth in economic activity, led AEMO to forecast near linear growth in electricity…

…average by 0.6% per year and 1.4%, repsectively between 2017 and 2019. Overall, average fuel consumption of LDVs in Australia has improved since 2005, though the rate of improvements has slowed to 0.3% per year since 2017. In contrast to most major LDV markets, the sales share of diesel vehicles has expanded considerably since 2005 in Australia. Diesel accounted for 32% of LDV sales in 2019, which is far higher than the global average. Most of the growth in diesel shares has occured in the large and small SUV/pick-up truck segement. Between 2017 and 2019…

Australia's legislation on oil security
Introduction The Australian Government’s response to national oil supply emergencies is primarily governed by the Liquid Fuels Emergency Act 1984 (LFE Act). Compared to primary legislation addressing national oil supply emergencies in other IEA Member countries, the LFE Act is more general in nature. The LFE Act provides the Commonwealth Energy Minister (the Minister) with powers in a national liquid fuel emergency to issue directions, and the Liquid Fuel Emergency Guidelines 2019 (Guidelines) set out the parameters of these powers and what a decision-maker must do or consider when exercising a power in an emergency situation.Under the Australian…

…energy systems. Overall precipitation has declined, raising concerns about droughts and wildfires, particularly in southern Australia. Despite the trend towards increasing dryness, heavy rainfalls and tropical cyclones are also expected to become more intense due to global warming.Australia’s National Climate Resilience and Adaptation Strategy 2021-2025 takes a system-wide approach to adaptation and resilience-building across all domains, including the built domain, which encompasses energy system climate resilience. State-level and sectoral schemes complement the national strategy, while federal government efforts to minimise disaster risks and reinforce the resilience of critical infrastructure also support the plan. Additionally…

Paving the way to recovery with utility-funded energy efficiency
Abstract Measures to improve energy efficiency offer opportunities to create local jobs, save on energy bills and cost-effectively reduce greenhouse gas emissions and other harmful pollutants. This makes energy efficiency an important part of effective response and recovery programmes during the Covid-19 crisis. There are many effective policies and programmes driving energy efficiency improvements. This paper focuses on energy utility-funded energy efficiency programmes, one of the primary mechanisms for improving energy efficiency around the world. Utility-funded programmes provide several unique advantages. With the exception of areas without access to electricity, nearly every citizen and business is…

…2020 and expected conditions in 2021. It also provides an analysis of the evolution of coal supply costs, prices and investment in mining projects. China – the world’s largest coal producer and importer as well as consumer of more than half of global coal – is highlighted. In addition, Coal 2020 includes forecasts of coal demand, production and trade by region and coal grade, and a compilation of coal mining projects in the main exporting countries in its annexes. Coal 2020 is an integral component of the International Energy Agency’s annual market report series that also includes oil, natural gas…

…goals. To support its clean energy transition, Australia needs to strengthen its resilience to supply disruptions across all fuels, whether from climate change impacts or global energy price shocks. Flexibility, fuel availability and resilient infrastructure will become even more vital as Australia’s energy system incorporates very high shares of variable renewables and is likely to face more frequent and more extreme weather events. Gas market reforms can help ensure energy security during the transition. In this report, the IEA provides energy policy recommendations to help Australia effectively manage the transformation of its energy sector in line with its goals.

Energy Policies of IEA Countries: Australia 2018 Review
…exporter of coal, uranium and liquefied natural gas (LNG), much of which is destined for Asia’s growing markets. At home, Australia’s energy sector is undergoing a significant transformation. The power system is seeing higher shares of variable wind and solar power; South Australia leads the deployment. Yet despite this wealth of resources, energy security concerns are on the rise. As domestic oil production is dwindling, dependency on oil product imports and the oil supply chain are growing steadily. Gas supply in the east coast market has become tight, leading to higher prices in that market. Australia’s power…

Renewables 2020
Analysis and forecast to 2025 In May 2020, the IEA market update on renewable energy provided an analysis that looked at the impact of Covid-19 on renewable energy deployment in 2020 and 2021. This early assessment showed that the Covid-19 crisis is hurting – but not halting – global renewable energy growth. Half a year later, the pandemic continues to affect the global economy and daily life. However, renewable markets, especially electricity-generating technologies, have already shown their resilience to the crisis. Renewables 2020 provides detailed analysis and forecasts through 2025 of the impact of Covid-19 on renewables in…

…liquefied natural gas and uranium to the Asia-Pacific region and beyond. This contributes to international availability and security of energy supply. Efforts are under way to increase LNG exports and to make Australian coal even more competitive.
For most of the past decade, Australia has been at the forefront of energy market liberalisation. Following liberalisation by individual states in the early 1990s, the competitive National Electricity Market was established in 1998. The NEM integrates markets across the eastern and south-eastern states. The benefits have been considerable: strong competition, significant price reductions and consumer choice. Gas market reform has…
