Tracking COP28 Energy Outcomes and Implications for NDCs

The IEA and the Secretariat of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) will co-host an event at the Bonn Climate Change Conference (SB60) on tracking progress towards the major energy outcomes agreed at COP28 in the first Global Stocktake. It will also explore what this means for governments as they develop the next round of Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement and the long-term low emission development strategies (LT-LEDS) that will underpin them. 

At COP28 in Dubai, nearly 200 countries made significant energy commitments aimed at driving down greenhouse gas emissions and limiting global warming to 1.5 °C, forming a central part of what is known as the UAE Consensus. These included the global pledges to triple renewable power capacity and double energy efficiency progress by 2030, substantially reduce methane emissions and accelerate the transition away from fossil fuels.

The event in Bonn will provide the latest information on key indicators and metrics identified by the IEA, in collaboration with the UNFCCC Secretariat, to monitor progress towards these goals and support policy makers and stakeholders as they work to advance clean energy transitions, including through the NDC process.
