Showcasing the importance of timely RD&D data for energy innovation
Add to calendar
Background
Timely and transparent data on public energy research, development, and demonstration (RD&D) budgets is important in view of the critical relevance of RD&D for energy policy goals related to energy security, affordability and the environment. Recognizing this, the International Energy Agency (IEA) has observed growing interest among member countries and stakeholders in improving the speed, comprehensiveness and accessibility of such information.
On 2 April 2025, the IEA launched The State of Energy Innovation, a landmark report offering a comprehensive overview of global energy innovation. This inaugural edition compiles the latest data, technical advancements, and policy developments, setting a new benchmark for tracking progress in energy innovation. Building on its success, the IEA proposes to make this report an annual publication, with future editions released in spring each year.
In addition, looking ahead to 2026, the IEA Ministerial—scheduled for mid-February—presents a strategic opportunity to align the release of The State of Energy Innovation with the Energy Innovation Forum. To meet this timeline, the IEA aims to support countries in submitting earlier data, including preliminary estimates for 2025, which would provide stronger support for the report.
Objectives
This workshop serves as a platform to:
- Present insights from the IEA’s Chief Energy Technology Officer on the importance of timely data for effective analysis and policymaking;
- Explain the rationale and benefits of earlier data submissions;
- Showcase examples from countries already providing timely estimates;
- Share assessment from the Energy Data Centre on current data submission cycles and the status of timeliness across IEA member countries;
- Encourage countries to consider submitting preliminary data for inclusion in the 2026 report;
- Discuss how to address potential challenges faced by countries.
By fostering collaboration and sharing best practices, this initiative aims to enhance the quality and timeliness of global energy innovation data—supporting better decisions and faster progress toward clean energy goals.
