Launch of 2020 India Clean Energy Investment Trends

The International Energy Agency (IEA) and the CEEW Centre for Energy Finance (CEEW-CEF) are pleased to invite you to a webinar on the ‘Evolving landscape of Indian renewable energy investments’. The webinar will feature the launch of the Clean Energy Investment Trends 2020 report. Now in its third iteration, the Clean Energy Investment Trends report tracks project-level renewable energy market and financing trends to explain how the interaction of risks and regulations shapes investment flows.

Investor interest in the Indian renewable energy sector remains strong, even amid the ongoing Covid- 19 pandemic. Over 12 GW of utility-scale renewable energy projects were sanctioned at the peak of a nationwide lockdown in the second quarter of calendar year 2020. Financial performance expectations are crucial in driving investment. While the economic downturn has curbed investment around the world, the relatively resilient return picture around renewable power assets and equities is creating new opportunities for investors to allocate capital towards the sector. However, a number of risks remain to realising higher levels of investment needed to meet India’s clean energy ambitions.

The 2020 Clean Energy Investment Trends report examines the appeal of renewable energy investment in India by analysing project-level equity returns over 2019 and the first half of 2020, as well updating analyses on debt financing and market trends of previous editions. The report further examines major stumbling blocks to attracting capital stemming from issues related to policy uncertainty, the financial health of state distribution companies, demand risk, and land-related constraints.

Building on insights from the report, the webinar will highlight the opportunities and challenges to scaling up investment in solar PV and wind in India, looking at both project- and system-level issues. Further, the discussion will also examine urgent policy and regulatory changes needed to elevate investment flows to a level needed to reach domestic renewable targets.
