Background information

The IEA has a wide work programme with the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Indonesia. As part of this work programme, the IEA organised a deep dive workshop on building interconnection. Building interconnection is part of Indonesia’s strategy to build a modern, clean, secure and efficient electricity sector for the future. Interconnection can increase the reliability of the system by providing resource sharing opportunities across islands as well as with other ASEAN Member States. Interconnection is also a key enabler for reaching Indonesia’s renewable targets of 23 % renewables in total primary energy supply by 2025.

In the workshop ways of attracting investment into transmission was discussed, as well as what factors are important when assessing the business case of building interconnection. As such interconnection needs to provide socio economic value for all Indonesians. The webinar gave participants a change to discuss the importance of increasing transmission as well as potential ways of attracting investment in the sector.
