IEA at COP28: Driving change – Propelling the future through battery innovation and development

Lithium-ion batteries are revolutionizing the automotive industry with 10 million new electric vehicles (EVs) registrations and a 14% sales share in 2022, an exponential growth that is foreseen to continue in the next years. Battery innovation, from novel chemistries and battery architectures to (ultra)fast charging and battery swapping, is however still needed to keep EVs momentum and decarbonize other important transportation modes, like medium- and heavy-duty trucks, and support the decarbonization of the power grid via stationary storage. In addition, further investments and development are needed to boost battery recycling and, when possible, second life to reduce climate impact and increase supply chain resilience.

The skyrocketing demand for batteries and the need for innovations call for international cooperation and industry-government coordination to rapidly scale up production and improve performance while avoiding supply chain shortages of battery components in general and critical minerals in particular. The aim of this event is therefore to bring together representatives from industry and government to discuss their experiences in public-private and international cooperation as well as to explore new ways to accelerate batteries innovation and development.
