Strengthening Energy Infrastructure Resilience

Managing risks from natural hazards and extreme weather

The global energy landscape is evolving. New energy security threats are emerging. The IEA is at the forefront of identifying risks and developing effective responses in both the near and long term. Extreme weather, natural hazards, and climate change are among the most frequent sources of disruption, and measures to strengthen infrastructure resilience to these challenges can also enhance preparedness for a broader range of energy security risks.

At the Future of Energy Security Summit co-hosted by the IEA and the UK government in April, participants underlined that natural hazards and extreme weather events are among the most frequent and consequential disruptions to the energy sector, particularly electricity supply. They shared experiences of how such events have affected their systems and the steps being taken to enhance resilience without raising energy costs. As reflected in the Chair’s Summary, many participants called on the IEA to assess current and future risks as a first step toward building stronger resilience.

This high-level roundtable is organised in response to that request. It focuses on no-regrets measures to strengthen energy system resilience—looking at how the sector is responding to risks today, how these measures are being financed, and the advances in data and analysis needed to support smart investment and long-term planning. The discussion will establish a clear near-term action agenda while feeding into the IEA’s broader work on energy security and resilience.

This event is by invitation only.
