G20 Meeting of Global Commission on People-Centred Clean Energy Transitions: Designing for Fairness
Add to calendar
Background information
As part of its G20 Presidency, South Africa is committed to ensuring the realisation of just, affordable, and inclusive energy transitions that prioritise socioeconomic equity alongside climate goals. Building on the momentum generated by the endorsement of the G20 Principles for Just and Inclusive Transitions by G20 Leaders in 2024, South Africa seeks to build out the G20 Principles for Just and Inclusive Transitions by showcasing concrete implementation examples and developing clear methods for defining success, tracking progress, and reporting systematically on results.
In support of this priority, the IEA Global Commission on People-Centred Clean Energy Transitions will convene during the opening of the G20 Energy Transitions Ministerial in October 2025. This high-level roundtable will mark the launch of the Indicators Handbook for Just and Inclusive Energy Transitions, published as an official G20 Presidency document developed by Global Commission members in collaboration with the G20 Presidency Secretariat and its local partners.
The roundtable discussion will mark an opportunity for members of the Commission to reflect on the key issues raised by the Indicators Handbook, with a particular focus on the experiences and priorities of Sub-Saharan Africa, including by bringing together African trade union leaders, government representatives, and other civil society stakeholders to ensure local realities are reflected in the implementation of the G20 Principles.
