Delivering the Belém pledge: policy design to scale a suite of sustainable fuels

Event

The International Energy Agency (IEA) is organising a workshop to discuss policy design to scale a suite of sustainable fuels. The COP30 Belém pledge, endorsed by 28 countries, aims to quadruple sustainable fuel production and use by 2035.

IEA analysis supporting the pledge indicates that, if fully legislated and implemented, current and proposed national and international policies would put sustainable fuels use on a path to nearly double from 2024 levels by 2030 and quadruple by 2035. However, the IEA estimates that, with stated and announced policies, production and consumption would need to be 2.4 times greater, to meet the levels required.

This IEA workshop will gather stakeholders from countries, industry, international organizations, and subject matter experts in sustainable fuels, to have an informed discussion on the challenges of sustainability, technology development, and how policy can increase their societal benefits. It will combine presentations based on recent developments, with interactive discussions.

Workshop objectives

  • Identify key policy developments that could encourage an acceleration in the deployment of the suite of sustainable fuel technologies at the scale required.

  • Improve understanding on how sustainability objectives can be coordinated to give confidence to consumers that fuels used are sustainable.

  • Exchange information on the continuing developments in sustainable fuels.

The workshop will be held under the Chatham House Rule. Attendance is by invitation only.
