COP29-IEA High-Level Energy Transition Dialogue

The COP29 Presidency and International Energy Agency (IEA) are holding the first in a series of high-level energy transition dialogues ahead of the COP29 climate summit in Baku, Azerbaijan, in November. The dialogues – in close partnership with UN Climate Change – will continue to build international consensus around pathways to limit global warming to 1.5 °C following the important energy pledges made at COP28 in Dubai last year.

The first dialogue looking towards Baku will be co-chaired by COP29 President-Designate Mukhtar Babayev and IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol at the IEA’s headquarters in Paris. It will focus on the implementation of the energy outcomes from COP28, including the 2030 commitments to triple global renewable energy capacity, double energy efficiency improvements and accelerate the transition away from fossil fuels. The dialogue will also provide an important opportunity for the COP29 Presidency to share its vision and emerging priorities for the Baku summit, and for a wide range of global energy and climate decision makers to provide timely feedback and input.

Participants are set to include Executive Secretary of UN Climate Change Simon Stiell; African Union Commissioner for Infrastructure and Energy Amani Abou-Zeid; Egyptian Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Tarek El Molla; German Special Envoy for International Climate Action Jennifer Morgan; and Irish Minister for Transport, Climate, Environment and Communications Eamon Ryan – as well as COP24 President Michał Kurtyka and COP26 President Alok Sharma.
