6th Electricity Security Advisory Board High-Level Meeting

Event — Paris, France

250909 Electricity Security Advisory Board Dsc3280 1

Background information

The 6th annual meeting of the Electricity Security Advisory Board (ESAB) will take place on Tuesday, 9 September 2025, at the IEA's headquarters in Paris. This high-level gathering operates within the framework of the IEA's Electricity Security Task Force (ESTF), bringing together external stakeholders alongside country delegates to address critical electricity security challenges.

Created in December 2024, the ESTF serves as the IEA's main advisory body on electricity security. The ESAB serves as a platform for governments, regulators, industry representatives and academic experts to engage in strategic dialogue on emerging electricity security concerns and effective policy responses. The Board facilitates exchange of experiences and lessons learned from diverse global perspectives as power systems undergo significant transformation.

Meeting focus

As electricity's role continues to expand due to its versatility, efficiency and capacity to reduce dependency on imported fossil fuels, ensuring electricity security has become a fundamental priority. This year's meeting will examine how power systems can maintain resilience while integrating variable renewable resources and managing increasing electrification of end-uses.

The sessions will feature expert discussion on two critical topics:

  • Regional interconnections and decentralisation for enhanced system resilience – exploring how complementary trends in greater cross-border connectivity and distributed energy resources reshape grid architecture and operational practices
  • Ensuring resource adequacy with increasing system variability – examining strategies to maintain reliable electricity supply during challenging periods such as extended low renewable output events and coincident demand peaks

Format

The meeting will be conducted informally under the Chatham House Rule, with each panel session introduced by invited speakers followed by roundtable discussions.

Attendance is by invitation only. Presentations will be made available on this page after the meeting, upon approval from presenters.
