Methane Tracker Database and Methane Abatement Model

Database of country and regional estimates for methane emissions and methane abatement potential and the associated cost of abatement by country, segment and reduction technology.

Background information

This database presents the IEA’s country-by-country estimates of energy-related methane emissions. For coal supply and the oil and gas sector, we present detailed estimates for the abatement potential – and costs or savings – from different technology and policy options.

The interactive version of the Methane Tracker Database also includes detailed policy information and comparisons with other sources of methane emissions estimates.

The IEA Methane Abatement model is a tool that allows users to estimate oil and gas methane abatement potential and the associated cost of abatement by country, segment and reduction technology. Assumptions and inputs can be adjusted, allowing users to tailor the methane abatement potential and cost estimates by country, segment and methane reduction technology.

This model underpins the lEA's work on methane abatement potential and costs as found in the Global Methane Tracker report. For information on inputs and estimation methodology, please read the Global Methane Tracker documentation.

The IEA is releasing the abatement part of its methane model publicly to support methane abatement estimations, as well as to give people the opportunity to review our model and provide feedback.

Code source is hosted as a public project on GitLab. Related dataset can be found below.
