Data and statistics

Energy data collection and training is at the heart of the IEA’s work

Consistent, accurate and timely energy data and statistics are fundamental to developing effective energy policies and advancing global energy security, affordability and sustainability. The IEA is the world’s most authoritative and comprehensive source of energy data, supporting governments, industry, investors, researchers, civil society and other decision makers around the world.

Drawing on inputs from national administrations, the IEA collects, assesses and disseminates a wide range of energy data and statistics. Its data on energy supply and demand underpin annual energy statistics and balances for almost every country, while monthly data collections on oil, gas and electricity support the monitoring of near-term energy security and market developments. Other datasets cover areas such as energy prices, innovation, access and investment, alongside indicators tracking energy efficiency, greenhouse gas emissions and the gender dimensions of energy issues.

The IEA also synthesises data and analysis to track progress on energy technologies and policies, helping users identify emerging trends, monitor short-term shifts and model pathways toward secure and sustainable energy transitions at both national and global levels.

Alongside its data and analytical work, the IEA supports the development of energy data capacities worldwide through training programmes and bilateral cooperation with countries to strengthen their own energy information systems. The Agency works closely with international partners, including the United Nations, Eurostat and regional organisations, to improve the quality, consistency and accessibility of global energy data. The IEA is also a founding partner of the Joint Organisations Data Initiative (JODI), alongside APEC, Eurostat, the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF), the Latin American Energy Organisation (OLADE), the United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD), OPEC and the International Energy Forum (IEF). In addition, the IEA works closely with the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) to maintain a joint database of renewable energy policies and measures.
