  • There are currently 16.5 million electric cars on the road, 6.6 million of which were sold in 2021.

Electric cars represented 9% of global car sales in 2021.

  • In Europe and the United States, most electric vehicles are charged at home, which is reflected in the share of home charging points that is exceeding 80% in these countries.

While in current most developed EV markets, home charging represents the bulk of passenger EV charging, it is important to ensure coverage by public charging infrastructure to reduce range anxiety and address all use cases.

  • The power sector plays a key role in ensuring a secure supply of electricity for EV charging. The flexible nature of EV charging needs can be leveraged to ensure seamless integration.

But like any other electric load, EVs impact the power system. Areas that are not sufficiently equipped may experience supply or quality difficulties.

    Ev Spotlight 3
  • Even with sufficient network capacity, the coincidence of EV charging with peak power consumption periods increases the requirement for generation redundancy, resulting in additional system costs.

Policy makers should assess the power system impacts and incentivise smart-readiness to optimally integrate EVs in the grid.

  • Several measures exist to mitigate the impacts of electric mobility on the electricity system.

Variable time-of-use pricing and sub-hourly metering can maximise managed charging. This also provides flexibility to power systems when integrating variable renewable energies.

  • Our manual for policy makers provides key recommendations to effectively integrate electric vehicle charging into the grid, thereby supporting road transport electrification and decarbonisation.

It focuses on four main areas: the readiness of institutions, impact assessment of EV charging, operational measures to integrate EVs, and power system planning.
