                UK green licence plates

…a green flash on the left-hand side of the plate to raise awareness about clean energy vehicles. The government also expects that the initiative will help drivers benefit from local incentives such as access to cheaper parking and entry into zero-emissions zones, all of which will motivate greater uptake of electric vehicles. The first plates were introduced on UK roads in December 2020 and can be retrofitted onto existing zero-emissions vehicles. Research conducted by Nissan and YouGov found that 32% of people surveyed indicated they were more likely to purchase an EV because of the green strip.

The initiative offers an open platform for region-wide multi-stakeholder dialogue to share experiences, knowledge and best practices on the transition, and region-to-region exchanges with EU counterparts. The selected pilot regions will be able to access dedicated trainings through a Coal Academy, technical assistance in the development of transition roadmaps, and receive support to access financing opportunities. Since 2021, the initiative’s secretariat in Brussels has facilitated its implementation and ensures stakeholder collaboration. It is managed by the European Commission and six collaborating international partners, building on the existing EU initiative…

For both the Dytiki Makedonia and Peloponnesus coal-mining regions, Greece participates in the Initiative for coal regions in transition that offers technical assistance and capacity building toward the development of inclusive transition strategies and roadmaps. In 2020, Greece submitted a detailed plan for managing a just transition for its coal regions to the European Commission, supported by the World Bank and the EC’s Directorate-General for Structural Reform Support. The roadmap included findings from a comprehensive, multi-disciplinary research project that examined key topics for a transition away from lignite in Western Macedonia. The proposed…

…Among the focus areas of the dialogue are managing the ‘just energy transition,’ skills and qualifications, and youth employment. A 2017 joint declaration of the Electricity Sectoral Social Dialogue Committee focused on the need for quality job creation, reskilling/upskilling, involvement of local partners and communities, as well as European financial instruments to support a just transition in electricity. In 2018, the social partners signed the ‘Roadmap on Skills and Qualifications and the ‘Joint pledge to join the European Alliance for Apprenticeships’, which are aimed at future-proofing the skills and qualifications of workers as part of the electricity transition.
