Country
South Africa
Coal is the mainstay of the South African energy system, meeting around 70% of installed power generation capacity. The 2019 Integrated Resource Plan however sets out a long-term diversification of the power mix by 2030 and moves towards lightening the carbon footprint of the energy sector while meeting growing energy demand and ensuring a socio-economically just transition. While the options to diversify the country's electricity mix appear diverse, the affordability of electricity supply looms as a key concern and a potential constraint on diversification. The structure of consumption and of spending on electricity is skewed towards higher…

Activities Implemented Jointly (AIJ)
In March 1995, the governments of Hungary and the Netherlands initiated a series of Activities Implemented Jointly (AIJ) projects to promote AIJ as a feasible means of energy conservation and emissions reduction. This pilot AIJ included a demonstration of small-scale energy efficiency projects for municipalities and utilities managed by NOVEM (National Energy and Environmental Agency of the Netherlands) together with EGI (Institute for Energy Management, Hungary) Consulting and Engineering in Budapest. This simulation studied a number of energy efficiency projects initiated by local governments: in most cases, these projects were identified based on expert advice provided earlier through the…

Multiple Benefits of Energy Efficiency for Business
Energy efficiency is often described as the “first fuel” because the cheapest and most secure energy is the energy that is not used. For businesses, this begins with a straightforward benefit: lower energy bills. In many cases, efficiency investments can pay back quickly through reduced energy costs alone. However, the value of energy efficiency extends beyond energy savings. This report builds on the IEA’s work on the multiple benefits of energy efficiency and focusses on how these gains materialise in businesses. Key benefits range from productivity and product quality improvements to brand image or health benefits for employees and…
