…energy and climate change policies. The current Spanish framework for energy and climate is based on the 2050 objectives of national climate neutrality, 100% renewable energy in the electricity mix and 97% renewable energy in the total energy mix. As such, it is centred on the massive development of renewable energy, particularly solar, wind and renewable hydrogen, increasing energy efficiency and improving electrification. This is an opportunity for the country to not only stimulate the economy and by creating jobs through the modernisation of industry, but also to support vulnerable populations, improve energy security and support RD&D and innovation.

…a significant amount of new LNG capacity that had been on track to come online in the second half of this decade. While gas producers are making efforts to increase supply, the demand side is set to play a key role in balancing the market – particularly in Asia, where fuel switching is already picking up alongside energy-saving measures. The current energy crisis highlights the need to further strengthen the architecture of global gas supply security. The International Energy Agency (IEA) continues to support this process, including through the permanent Working Party on Natural Gas and Sustainable Gases Security (GWP).

                Scaling Up Transition Finance

                Transition
Finance Actions by emissions-intensive sectors, companies and countries are crucial to placing the world on a sustainable pathway. Yet investments that could deliver meaningful reductions in their environmental footprint often do not receive sufficient financial support. Currently, finance is drawn heavily to certain “green” assets and activities. While vital, these investments alone cannot deliver all the changes needed to cut global emissions, especially in areas where clean technologies are not yet commercially available or cost-competitive. This is where transition finance comes in: it can help emissions-intensive countries, companies and sectors shift over time towards…

At the same time, the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework aims to protect 30% of the world's land by 2030, requiring an additional 20 million km² of land – an area slightly larger than South America – to be set aside for conservation. The IEA Renewable Energy and Land-Use Model (REALM) identifies potential overlaps between renewables development, energy transition minerals mining and biodiversity conservation. Natural Resources Canada and the IEA partnered to develop this analytical framework capable of highlighting where solar, wind and critical mineral development risk overlapping with important areas for biodiversity…
