…set of sanctions against Iran affecting the energy sector, specially the oil industry. These sanctions have been deployed in a set of regulations, including Iran Sanctions, Accountability, and Human Rights Act of 2012 and National Defence Authorization Act 2012. Both acts were lifted as part of the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, but reinstated again in 2018. Some of the restrictions included in the mentioned acts are the following: Sanctions on all foreign financial institutions (including foreign central banks or foreign state-owned or controlled banks) that conduct or facilitate significant financial transactions for the purchase of Iranian petroleum or petroleum…

The Middle East and Global Energy Markets

…futures – the global benchmark for crude prices – rose steeply, peaking at more than 60% above pre-conflict levels in late April. Prices pulled back in late May and early June as strategic stock releases and demand weakness eased market tightness, and after the United States and Iran announced an interim agreement to end hostilities. Physical crude markets continue to reflect acute supply tightness as refiners scramble to replace lost Middle Eastern cargoes with alternative supplies. Prices for certain oil products – notably diesel, jet fuel and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), which have been particularly exposed to the disruption – remain elevated.Shipments…

                Oil 2025 Executive summaryExecutive summary

…anticipated output increase from OPEC+ and the impact of higher tariffs on trade pushed oil prices to four-year lows in April and early May. As a result, oil executives are recalibrating investment plans. However, oil prices have since rebounded after an exchange of air strikes between Israel and Iran started on 13 June 2025. With geopolitical and economic uncertainties affecting oil producers and consumers alike, oil supply security remains high on the international energy policy agenda. Oil markets are going through a fundamental transformation as the drivers of global oil supply and demand patterns shift. Over the past decade…

Iraq holds abundant oil and gas resources and has strong solar PV potential. Its production to 2030 is set to be third largest contributor to global oil supply. By the same year, the government expects that renewable capacity will amount for 5% of the country’s total system capacity.

                Tajikistan

Hydropower is the main source of energy in Tajikistan, followed by imported oil, gas and coal. However, Tajikistan's energy sector is prone to supply shocks, due to seasonal shortages. Energy policy focuses on providing uninterrupted energy access to all users while improving regional co‑operation and energy sector efficiency, but significant domestic and foreign investment will be necessary for continued energy sector development. Tajikistan is part of the EU4Energy Programme, an initiative focused on evidence-based policymaking for the energy sector.

Despite being energy self-sufficient thanks to its gas sector, Uzbekistan's ageing infrastructure struggles to meet growing domestic demand. Losses, overuse and financing remain problematic. Wide-ranging reforms focused on improving and diversification the energy sector are being introduced and the government has adopted the Strategy of Actions 2017-2021, which prioritizes improving energy efficiency and increasing generating capacity and use of renewables. Uzbekistan is part of the EU4Energy Programme, an initiative focused on evidence-based policymaking for the energy sector.
