New podcast episode focuses on the risks in critical mineral supply chains

The latest episode of the IEA’s Everything Energy podcast examines the rising strategic importance of key energy-related minerals, including copper, lithium, nickel, cobalt, graphite, rare earth elements and more. Now available on Apple Podcasts and Spotify, the episode features conversations with Benjamin Gallezot, the critical minerals envoy of France – which holds this year’s G7 Presidency – and Jakob Stausholm, the former CEO of multinational mining group Rio Tinto. Speaking on the sidelines of the IEA’s 2026 Ministerial Meeting in February, they discuss why policymakers and industry alike are focusing so much on critical minerals, and what could be done to strengthen the security…

Accelerated capital cost allowance rates for low-carbon liquified natural gas facilities

Budget 2025 proposed reinstating accelerated capital cost allowances for LNG equipment and related buildings for low-carbon LNG. The Spring Economic Update includes implementation details, with eligible facilities required to have an emissions intensity of less than or equal to 0.20 tCO2e/tLNG. The CCA rate would be 50% for liquefaction equipment and 10% for facility buildings.

                Long-Term Strategy (LTS)

The document outlines Greece’s long-term strategy for hydrogen, emphasizing its role in achieving climate neutrality by 2050. Key goals include developing hydrogen production from renewable sources, integrating hydrogen into the energy system, and promoting its use in various sectors such as industry and transportation. The strategy aims to establish a robust hydrogen infrastructure, support research and innovation, and create a regulatory framework to facilitate hydrogen market growth. These efforts are intended to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, enhance energy security, and drive economic growth through sustainable energy solutions.

Croatia National Energy and Climate Plan (NECP)

This plan covers five key dimensions: decarbonization (including greenhouse gas emission reduction and renewable energy targets), energy efficiency, energy security, the internal energy market, and research, innovation, and competitiveness. It sets national targets for 2030, such as reducing greenhouse gas emissions and increasing the share of RES and energy efficiency, and details the policies and measures planned across various sectors to reach these goals. The plan was revised in 2025 and introduced specific new measures such as the decommissioning of coal power plants and the creation of a program to combat "mobility poverty".

                Portugal 2026 Energy Policy Review

About the report Government action plays a pivotal role in ensuring secure and sustainable energy transitions. Energy policy is critical not just for the energy sector but also for meeting environmental, economic and social goals. Governments need to respond to their country’s specific needs, adapt to regional contexts and help address global challenges. In this context, the International Energy Agency (IEA) conducts Energy Policy Reviews to support governments in developing more impactful energy and climate policies. This Energy Policy Review was prepared in partnership between the Government of Portugal and the IEA. It draws on the IEA’s extensive…

Growth in global demand for natural gas is set to accelerate in 2026 as LNG wave spreads through markets

Rapid expansion of liquefied natural gas supply, mostly from North America, is expected to reduce market pressures at a time of heightened geopolitical uncertainty A surge in liquefied natural gas supply is expected to play a key role in rebalancing global gas markets in 2026, leading to stronger demand growth after a slowdown last year, according to the IEA’s latest quarterly Gas Market Report. The report, out today, finds that global gas demand growth slowed markedly to less than 1% in 2025 following a relatively strong increase in 2024. Tighter gas supplies in the first half of 2025 resulted in…
