Boundary Dam carbon capture project in Canada
…be in service for an additional three decades. The technologies applied will allow the project to reduce SO2 emissions by up to 100% and CO2 by up to 90%. The power plant has captured over 4 Mt CO2, with most of it used in enhanced oil recovery and stored, and a smaller portion injected and stored in Aquistore, a deep geological CO2 storage research site. The lessons learned from Boundary Dam also provide a foundation for capturing CO2 in a variety of sectors where CCUS deployment will be critical – including in cement, iron and steel, and natural gas power generation.

In terms of sector specific interventions, for example, in the cement industry the most common measures covered installation of waste heat recovery systems and vertical rolling mills. In the iron and steel sector, measures included installation of top recovery turbines and adoption of coke dry quenching process. The trading of energy saving certificates (ESCerts) is central to the PAT programme and serves as an incentive to reach or surpass the mandatory targets. The ESCerts, equivalent to 1 tonne of oil equivalent (toe) of energy savings, are given based on quantified energy savings…

…efficiency level against others within the same sub-sector, and medium- and long-term targets are set (to be achieved around 2015-2020). Currently, each factory and workplace is required to achieve annually on average 1 % reduction or more in energy intensity. The revision adds benchmarking indicators and associated targets to the above in certain sub-sectors: iron and steel, cement, and electricity suppliers. Targets are set at the energy efficiency level of the best performing companies (top 10%-20%) in each sub-sector based on the average value and standard deviation. Companies covered by the scheme must submit yearly…

In February 2003, President Bush announced that trade associations representing 12 major industrial sectors and The Business Roundtable have committed to work with cabinet agencies (DOE, EPA, DOT, and USDA) to reduce greenhouse gas intensity in the next decade. Participating industry sectors include: Americas electric utilities; petroleum refiners and natural gas producers; automobile, iron and steel, chemical and magnesium manufacturers; forest and paper producers; railroads; and the cement, mining, aluminum and semiconductor industries. Working with these trade associations and other groups, the program assists industry efforts to accelerate the transition to practices, improved processes, and energy…

Energy Conservation (Government Regulation No. 70/2009)
…the establishment of a series of fiscal incentives to promote energy efficiency among industrial energy users, although they have yet to be introduced. The regulation outlines mandatory audits and public reporting on energy efficiency, which are aligned with international best practice. Indonesia aims to implement energy management practices for sectors where energy use is greater than 6 000 toe or 70 gigawatt hours per year. More specifically, regulation of MEPS for industrial equipment and the adoption of international standards are in the process of being introduced. Major industries with strong energy efficiency potential in Indonesia include textiles, iron and steel.
