Romania makes formal request to join the IEA as a Member country

The discussions underscored the Romanian government’s strong interest in deepening cooperation with the IEA and highlighted the Agency’s role as the global authority on energy.Romania’s request will be considered by IEA Member governments at the next meeting of the IEA Governing Board. If approved, Romania would become an IEA Accession country and begin the process toward membership, which involves aligning national energy policies, data and emergency preparedness frameworks with IEA standards and requirements. IEA Members reaffirm support for IEA-Ukraine Collaboration Programme

The IEA, together with the UNEP‑convened Climate and Clean Air Coalition (CCAC), co‑hosted the inaugural plenary meeting of the Methane Regulator‑to‑Regulator (MR2R) Network at the IEA headquarters in Paris on 14-15 April 2026.The two‑day meeting brought together government officials and regulators from nearly 30 countries and regional organisations, alongside representatives from international partner organisations. Denmark plans to build two world-first "energy islands" with a minimum capacity of 4 GW to convert low-carbon electricity into green hydrogen and synthetic fuels, supporting its 2050 carbon neutrality goal. One of the islands, located in the North Sea, will be co-owned by the government and private partners, with strategic collaborations involving Germany, Belgium, and Luxembourg.
