Global Commission for Urgent Action on Energy Efficiency

…have examined how progress on energy efficiency can be rapidly accelerated through new and stronger policy action by governments across the globe. It has developed this series of actionable recommendations to support governments in achieving more ambitious action on energy efficiency. The Commission's work comes at a critical moment in clean energy transitions around the world. Despite energy efficiency's tremendous potential, the world is struggling to capture its full benefits. Global energy demand continues to increase and CO2 emissions are at record levels. Meanwhile, energy intensity – the energy required to produce one unit of global gross domestic product (GDP) – is…

Biofuels Research to Reduce Transportation Emissions

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced USD 61.4 million of funding for the production of low-cost, low-carbon biofuels that will power heavy-duty vehicles  currently hard to electrify.  The "Bioenergy Technologies Office Scale-Up and Conversion” funding opportunity includes high-impact biotechnology research, development, and demonstration (RD&D) to bolster the body of scientific and engineering knowledge needed to produce low-carbon biofuels at lower cost.  Full applications are due on June 21, 2021.

                EU Innovation Fund

The EU Innovation Fund is one of the world’s largest funding programmes for the demonstration of innovative low-carbon technologies. It aims to deploy innovative net-zero technologies for climate neutrality through project funding. The programme is funded by the sales of EU Emissions Trading System (ETS) allowances such that emitters indirectly fund the technologies that can help them avoid ETS costs in future. Based on a carbon price of EUR 75/tonne plan to have a total funding budget of €40 billion for the 2020-2030 period. The scope has recently been broadened to allocate more of the…

                National green hydrogen strategy

The strategy outlines five priorities: hydrogen production near the Port of Aqaba, demand creation in transport and blending, low-cost supply through regulation and incentives, continued renewable energy deployment, and an enabling environment with standards and workforce development. It includes 43 actions across three timeframes to 2050, with designated stakeholders. Plans include domestic electrolyzer manufacturing from the 2030s and a certification scheme before 2030. Three scenarios explore renewable hydrogen production of up to 3.4 Mtpa by 2050, with demand reaching 1.1 Mtpa. Estimated investment needs total USD 175 billion. Follow-up actions include forming a cross-ministerial steering…
