IEA launches tracker to monitor policy responses to energy market impacts of Middle East conflict
…by governments to conserve energy and protect consumers from rising prices, as governments respond to supply disruptions and increased volatility, notably in markets for crude oil, oil products and liquefied natural gas (LNG).The conflict, which began on 28 February, has significantly impeded energy trade flows through the Strait of Hormuz, creating the largest supply disruption in the history of the global oil market. Statement by IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol on meeting of G7 Energy Ministers at IEA headquarters
…currently hold over 1.2 billion barrels of public emergency oil stocks, with a further 600 million barrels of industry stocks held under government obligation.Given conditions in oil markets, I have convened an extraordinary meeting of IEA Member governments, which will take place later today to assess the current security of supply and market conditions to inform a subsequent decision on whether to make emergency stocks of IEA countries available to the market.As well as IEA Members, I am also in close contact about the situation with energy ministers from key energy producers and consumers around the world.

Statement by IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol on his participation in a meeting of G7 Finance Ministers
…the challenges of transit through the Strait of Hormuz, a substantial amount of oil production has been curtailed. This is creating significant and growing risks for the market. We discussed all the available options, including making IEA emergency oil stocks available to the market. IEA Member countries currently hold over 1.2 billion barrels of public emergency oil stocks, with a further 600 million barrels of industry stocks held under government obligation.I am also in close contact about the situation with energy ministers from countries around the world, including recent calls with Saudi Arabia, Brazil, India, Azerbaijan and Singapore.

Data centre electricity use surged in 2025, even with tightening bottlenecks driving a scramble for solutions

Driven by data centre investments, the capital expenditure of five large technology companies surged to more than $400 billion in 2025 and is set to increase by a further 75% in 2026.
