Strengthening supply chains can improve resilience and reduce economic security risks for key energy technologies

…of the global economy. The market for them may well double over the next decade,” said IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol. “While seeking to capitalise on this growth, governments and industry need to strengthen supply chain resilience and industrial competitiveness to reduce geographic concentration and ensure that the increasing deployment of these technologies also delivers energy and economic security.”Under governments’ current policies, the global market for key energy technologies may grow from nearly $1.2 trillion today to around $2 trillion by 2035, roughly equivalent to the size of the global oil market last year, according to the report. Under governments’…

IEA releases major update to tracker of government responses to energy impacts of Middle East conflict

…a result, the tracker features details on 109 countries that have implemented energy-related measures in response to the crisis. The tracker, which is being updated regularly, complements the IEA’s broader work to support governments through the current crisis. The IEA has also released a report that presents a menu of demand-side measures that governments, businesses and households can take to shelter consumers from energy price pressures. And in March, the IEA announced the largest-ever coordinated release of emergency oil stocks in the Agency’s history. It continues to monitor the situation closely in coordination with leaders around the world.

Tracking SDG7: The Energy Progress Report, 2025

Tracking SDG7: The Energy Progress Report, 2025 Since its inception in 2018, Tracking SDG 7: The Energy Progress Report has become the global reference for information on progress toward the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 7 (SDG 7) of the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The aim of SDG 7 is to “ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy for all.” This report therefore summarizes global progress on electricity access, clean cooking, renewable energy, energy efficiency, and international cooperation to advance SDG 7. It presents updated statistics for each of the indicators and provides policy insights on…

In 2014, Brunei adopted a strategic plan to achieve 10% share of renewables in the national energy mix by 2035. The plan provides the outline to introduce renewable energy policy and regulatory frameworks and to scale-up market deployment of solar PV.

From farms to fuel: Ukraine’s biomethane opportunity for energy security and European decarbonisation

…milestone that opens an opportunity to scale-up domestic low-emissions gas. Home to the largest agricultural land area in Europe, Ukraine has the resource potential to become one of the continent’s leading biomethane producers, supplying both its domestic market and the EU via an already existing pipeline infrastructure. The first exports of biomethane come at a critical moment. Repeated Russian attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure have exposed the vulnerabilities of centralised energy supply. Although biomethane relies on the same gas distribution and transmission infrastructure as natural gas, its production is inherently more decentralised than domestic natural gas extraction…

                Oil 2025 Executive summaryExecutive summary

…uncertainties to the oil market outlook. Since the start of the year, major economic forecasters have cut their outlooks for world GDP growth in 2025 by roughly half a percentage point to around 2.8% and see a below-trend pace of about 3% annually for the remainder of the decade, with knock-on implications for oil demand. With conflicts in the Middle East region at risk of intensifying and trade negotiations ongoing, uncertainties surrounding our forecasts are substantial. At the same time, a decision by the OPEC+ producer group, led by Saudi Arabia, to start unwinding oil production curbs…

…Road transport, which has traditionally been the heartland of oil consumption, is undergoing structural changes, especially for personal mobility; nearly one-in-ten passenger cars sold worldwide in 2021 was an electric vehicle. And now high prices – and their economic impacts – are contributing further to near-term uncertainty.  Key findings The oil market today is grappling with huge near-term and long-term uncertainties. Fears of recession loom large over the immediate prospects for demand, although China could boost oil use as it emerges from renewed lockdowns. Sanctions on Russia and dwindling spare capacity cast a shadow over the adequacy…

                Economic growth

Multiple benefits of Energy Efficiency 2025 Energy efficiency provides multiple benefits. This page explores economic growth. Why is energy efficiency important for economic growth? Energy efficiency allows countries to generate more economic activity using the same amount of energy. It is also linked to increased labour productivity and other economic benefits.  Key facts Compared with 2000, today’s global economy produces 36% more GDP per unit of energy. Energy efficiency progress over the last 20 years means that close to an extra USD 50 trillion can today be produced using the same amount of energy. This energy efficiency bonus is equivalent to…
